I made some much-needed changes on the fundraising website this morning. Today is another busy day, talking to my fabrication team and leaning into investor packets and press kits for Pineapple Fields AND Resilience Rooms! I'm positive, hopeful and determined...and thank you so much to everyone who has contributed or shared! If you could all see what I'm seeing on the backside of this project..... 😍🥰

I've been cruising around social media for the last couple of hours and I've run across several pages that seem to be devoted to telling the stories of the homeless through video. What's concerning, though, is that the person behind the camera, in almost every case, is "interviewing" the homeless, behaving like a journalist, asking questions like, "If you could have anything, what would it be?" I would think that would be obvious! 🤔

Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels very opportunistic. Views and likes. I'd love to see someone actually offering HELP, offering the names and numbers of resources, offering a ride to the nearest emergency room instead of just filming them at their most vulnerable. I think we're seeing the homeless become fodder for content, and that takes us all down. Our lack of compassion as humans is the first thing we need to change. Then we can fix the rest. ❤️

This....is exactly why we're building Resilience Rooms! This is exactly why Pineapple Fields is in development. The reasons behind a person's homelessness are not black and white, and no one really knows all the details of another person's story. We are all human beings...we all deserve to go home. 💔

When designing the Tier 2 housing for a South Florida environment, several important considerations shaped the vision. Anyone who knows me knows I'm also kind of a tree hugger. 🥰😁🌳 I never wanted Pineapple Fields to become another development filled with massive structures that block wildlife movement, resist nature instead of working with it, or remain vulnerable to flooding and extreme weather.

During my research, I discovered Japanese Metabolism architecture and immediately connected with the design philosophy behind the Nakagin Capsule Tower. That inspiration helped shape a housing concept focused on flexibility, airflow, and harmony with the surrounding environment. By separating portions of the housing clusters and allowing open space between units, the design reduces the pressure hurricane-force winds place on the structures. The homes are also elevated above flood level, creating shaded areas beneath them for native and shade-loving crops while preserving open pathways for wildlife movement.

Rather than imposing on the landscape, the Tier 2 housing is intended to exist in partnership with it — creating a community that feels integrated with its local ecology, no matter where that may be.

Tier 3 is designed to serve our most vulnerable residents — individuals whose long-term trauma, chronic homelessness, or ongoing mental health challenges may prevent them from fully reintegrating into traditional society. Located in the most private and secure area of the property, Tier 3 provides a peaceful, low-stimulation environment centered on safety, stability, and dignity.

Residents are housed in small homes similar to the more compact units found in Tier 2, but with greater spacing and separation to support personal comfort, privacy, and emotional well-being. While these homes are intentionally set apart, residents are still encouraged to participate in the broader Pineapple Fields community at whatever level feels healthy and accessible to them.

Like Tier 2, the Tier 3 environment is immersed within gardens, native foliage, and restorative natural spaces. Research continues to demonstrate the profound positive impact that nature and environmental engagement can have on mental and emotional health. Through this model, we hope to create a setting where residents can experience peace, healing, connection, and an improved quality of life.

Our Tier 2 housing model offers the first true glimpse into the heart of the Pineapple Fields community. Located in the center of the property, this area consists of clustered small homes inspired by Japanese metabolism architecture and thoughtfully designed to withstand hurricane conditions while respecting natural wildlife movement patterns. The homes vary in size to accommodate both individuals and families, with each unit providing private living and sleeping areas as well as its own bathroom. Every cluster shares a communal kitchen, encouraging both independence and community connection. There is also a large Community Center/Community Kitchen in the center of Tier 2 where classes can be conducted, weekend childcare is available for working parents, or the community can gather to cook meals together as a whole.

This is where the vision of Pineapple Fields truly comes to life. The homes are woven into community gardens, native landscaping, and restorative green spaces designed to support both people and the surrounding ecosystem. Sustainable practices such as fish culture and apiculture play an important role in the community model, alongside the cultivation of native crops intended to strengthen — rather than disrupt — local ecology. Residents in Tier 2 are encouraged to work toward fully independent living within approximately one year, creating opportunities for new guests entering from Tier 1 while continuing the cycle of restoration and growth.

The thing that sets Pineapple Fields apart from most traditional homeless shelters or tiny house communities is its three-tier housing model:

Tier 1 functions similarly to a traditional shelter, with shared sleeping areas, showers, restrooms, and a kitchen dedicated exclusively to Tier 1 residents. What sets it apart is the integration of Resilience Rooms, designed to restore privacy, safety, dignity, and personal autonomy to our guests. Many individuals entering emergency shelter environments are transient and have not yet begun navigating the path toward stable housing. Our goal is to provide not only immediate refuge, but also a sense of stability and belonging while offering the first steps toward identity restoration, resource navigation, medical and mental health support, and ultimately permanent housing. Tier 1 also includes a dedicated Resource Center with computer workstations, counselors, and support staff to assist with education opportunities, job training, transportation access, and other essential services. The purpose of Tier 1 is to help guests transition into Tier 2 Transitional Housing, or to support them in continuing their journey if they choose to relocate elsewhere.
