WE HEAL HEARTS AND MINDS THROUGH RESCUE, SANCTUARY, AND EDUCATION. Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education & Experience Center rescues captive-bred exotic and un-releasable wild animals. We then provide a permanent home for those needing sanctuary, while adopting out animals screened as pet-quality. The animals we rescue have been abandoned, neglected, and abused. They have stories to share of survival, thri

ving, learning to trust again, and the healing power of unconditional love. We share their stories in a variety of ways through community presentations, on-site visits, and partnering with nonprofit organizations helping people in our Healing Hearts program. We work year-round to educate the public about the importance of protecting these animals and peacefully co-existing with wildlife. Our Healing Hearts program takes it one step further by sharing our residents’ stories of “rags to riches” with children and others who have experienced neglect, abandonment, or abuse and giving the humans interacting with them hope for the future and what it holds. Shy Wolf Sanctuary provides a permanent home to over 60 exotic residents and sometimes as many as 70 animals. The wolves and other resident animals are housed on a 2.5-acre property in Naples (FL) and are supported by over 80 active volunteers. Captive-bred exotic animals such as wolfdogs are generally considered unadoptable by domestic animal services and have nowhere else to go. Every year Shy Wolf networks with other rescuers across the country to assist in saving animals with nowhere to go. Those animals evaluated as “pet quality” will be put up for adoption with the new owners going through a rigorous application and screening process including a home check. Animals that are not adoptable as pets are placed in sanctuary and rescue whenever possible. Unfortunately the need is greater than the availability and we need YOUR help to build a bigger facility and save more animals.

In the month of May, we had a few too many health scares and more vet visits than we expected at the sanctuary.
Akira was one of few who worried us, when this normally food motivated little lady stopped eating and became lethargic. It was obvious something was very wrong. After multiple vet visits and close monitoring, we finally discovered the cause: she had ingested some type of toxic fungus that is common in the humid environment here in SWFL.
Thankfully, with the right treatment and a whole lot of monitoring, her body was able to clear the toxin and make a full recovery.
She is clearly back to her happy, food-loving, affectionate self - the Akira we all know and love! 🖤

Today, we share the sad news that the sanctuary's beloved prairie dog, Lena, has passed away.

At 7 years old, Lena had already exceeded the lifespan most prairie dogs reach. While her passing was sudden, we are grateful that she went peacefully, without pain, due to natural causes that come with old age.

Lena was a tiny resident who left an enormous impact on everyone who had the chance to meet her. She brought so much joy, laughter, and smiles to countless volunteers, visitors and staff over the year. Whether she was upside down in her hammock napping, throwing sand on us digging, or tricking everyone into giving her more snacks all day, every day, Lena was always capturing hearts.

In the final months of her life, Lena was lovingly care for in the home of one of our dedicated volunteers, Karen. Those months were filled with constant love, comfort, the attention Lena craved, and new best friends including two young boys and a great big dog named Tyson. We are thankful to Karen and her family for opening their home and heart to Lena Lena and giving her a wonderful last chapter.

While our hearts are heavy today, we take comfort in knowing that Lena was cherished every step of the way and knew nothing but love until the very end.

Run free, sweet Lena. You will be missed more than words can say.

Fun fact: Hollie has Heterochromia; which is the condition that causes her eyes to be two different colors. One is an icy blue, and the other a gorgeous light amber color. It is completely harmless, just makes her even more uniquely beautiful.
