The ultimate goal of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the face of the earth by building adequate and basic housing. Furthermore, all of our words and actions are for the ultimate purpose of putting shelter on the hearts and minds of people in such a powerful way that poverty housing and homelessness become socially, politically and religiously unacceptable in our nations and world.

Nearly two decades ago, Augustin and Maria came to Habitat hoping to give their three children a better life than the overcrowded apartment they called home.

Recently, they came back to make their final mortgage payment—and took a trip down memory lane with photos from their closing day all those years ago.

Today, their children are grown, their home is paid off, and nearly 20 years of memories fill the space in between. We’re proud to have been part of their journey and grateful that, with Habitat, the partnership doesn’t end on closing day.

There may be more exciting stages of building a home, but few are more important than this one.

Last week, crews were on site before dawn to pour slabs for the newest phase of construction at Las Palmas. They’ll eventually disappear beneath walls, floors and everything that makes a house feel like home, but the strength of everything above them begins here.

In many ways, that’s what homeownership can mean for a family, too: a strong foundation on which to build whatever comes next.

Some things just get better with time.

Five years ago, Vincent's Acres was a brand-new neighborhood. Today, it's a thriving community where families have put down roots and every home tells the story of the people who live there.

The trees are taller. The landscaping has filled in. Front porches have become gathering places and safe spots to park a bike while visiting neighborhood friends.

Communities aren't built overnight. They grow over time. Five years later, Vincent's Acres is exactly what it was always meant to be: a welcoming neighborhood where families take pride in their homes and build a future together.
