BEARS ON PATROL PROJECT
MEMBERS OF THE NAPLES CIVITAN CLUB
ARE COLLECTING YOUR DONATIONS!

Come to the next club meeting on Monday, September 14 at noon at Outback Steakhouse Restaurant by Lely and bring your donation. We can also pick your donation up! This is a program that started almost 30 years ago in the United States and supplies patrol officers with teddy bears to give to children to ease their fears when faced with trauma.
The Bears on Patrol project attempts to reduce psychological trauma experienced by young children when they are involved in incidents/accidents that occur on highways, homes, etc. Many children have been comforted by receiving teddy bears from State Patrol officers during these very distressful times.
The mission of this project is "to promote highway and public safety and to enhance the quality of life for all citizens and visitors by providing and supporting professional, competent, and compassionate law enforcement services."
Tragedy is all around us, but it's the goal of the Bears on Patrol program to make tragedy not all scary for these children suffering from trauma.
“The bears are an important tool for the officers when our mere presence or words of comfort aren’t enough. They’re designed to ease any fear and offer security to young children who are caught up in upsetting incidents or situations,” said the officer who received our gift.
Being able to give a child a new teddy bear to cuddle also brings a level of emotional benefit to the officers.
“Being able to calm a child down with a teddy bear makes me feel good, as though I was helping them more than just trying to explain to them what was going on. Small children who are not directly involved in a situation but witnessed or was just present experience a level of stress they don’t understand. Getting a toy, like a teddy bear, helps to calm their nerves more than an adult ever could,” she continued.
The teddy bear program allows inspectors and troopers to demonstrate that they are supportive and proactive in their words and actions. It is also helping paramedics when they receive a 911 call involving children.

Today, the Naples Civitan Club had its annual YMCA of Collier School Supplies Drive. Guest Speaker, Charlene Rose, Youth and Family Director, explained to the group about the educational programs at YMCA. She thanked those who made a donations. Thank you, Charlene, for speaking to the group!

CIVITAN CAMP ABLE PIZZA PARTY
Camp Able for disabled youngsters took place at Wesley United Methodist Church in Marco Island on Monday, July 13, ending on Thursday, July 16 this year. Civitan has been bringing them a pizza party since 2015!
Campers explored Marco Island during their daily excursions, like axe throwing, scuba diving, yoga, fishing, and more! In the afternoon at the Wesley’s campus, they enjoyed craft. The camp experience of 180 people, campers plus their volunteer helpers, culminates at their annual talent show. It was nice seeing Junior Civitans volunteering and even a past Jr. Civitan.
We would like to thank those Civitan club members who were able to volunteer by setting the tables, preparing desserts, serving the pizzas, and cleaning, on Tuesday, July 14. Club President Bob Kircher played the music to keep them entertained. Thank you so much!
