Preparedness starts long before a storm appears on the horizon. ๐ŸŒช๏ธ

As part of our ongoing readiness efforts, key leadership and personnel gathered at the Fire Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for a hurricane preparedness exercise. The drill brought together department directors, emergency management staff, including Fire Chief Phillip Pennington, Police Chief Ciro Dominguez, City Manager Gary Young, and other essential personnel to strengthen coordination, communication, and leadership collaboration ahead of hurricane season.

Effective emergency response begins well before a storm makes landfall. Through training, planning, and teamwork, we continue to ensure our community is prepared for whatever hurricane season may bring.

The City of Naples is taking proactive measures through the Naples Beach Restoration & Water Quality Improvement (Stormwater Beach Outfall) Project to ensure our drainage and stormwater infrastructure remains strong for years to come. Most of the finished work will never be seen, and we mean that in the best possible way. Effective infrastructure works in the background so life on the surface can continue uninterrupted.

The Stormwater Beach Outfall Project will modernize aging systems that have struggled to keep pace with the demands placed on our coastline, delivering long-term benefits for residents and the environment, including enhanced water quality, improved flood protection, and safeguards for wildlife.

We are pleased to report that the project continues to track ahead of schedule, and we appreciate your patience as work progresses.

Annually, the City of Naples Utilities Department temporarily changes the disinfection process for the Cityโ€™s potable (drinking water) water supply as part of water quality maintenance.

Beginning ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ฒ, ๐‰๐ฎ๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿ, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”, ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก ๐“๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ๐๐š๐ฒ, ๐‰๐ฎ๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”, the Utilities Department will disinfect the water with free chlorine rather than combined chlorine/ammonia (chloramines).

This annual conversion to free chlorine (a stronger disinfectant) from chloramines (a longer-lasting disinfectant) allows a water distribution system purge as recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection for water utilities using chloramines as their primary disinfectant.

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐„๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ญ

This temporary change in disinfectant does not cause adverse health effects. However, during the period, customers may experience a slight increase in the taste and odor of the water due to the change in treatment.

โ€ข ๐Š๐ข๐๐ง๐ž๐ฒ ๐ƒ๐ข๐š๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: Customers who use a proportioning machine to prepare dialysate at home are advised to contact their equipment supplier or physician to take any appropriate steps to accommodate the change in water disinfection and to install the proper filtering devices if needed.

โ€ข ๐€๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐Ž๐ฐ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ: Customers who maintain fish tanks or other aquatic species are advised to contact the local pet store to ensure proper pretreatment of the water before adding or changing the water in the tank to avoid any problems associated with chlorine.

Customers are asked to call the Water Treatment Plant at (239) 213-3004 with any questions concerning this temporary change in disinfection.
