**** GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION / FIRE STATION-2 ****

We would like to thank all those who were able to join us in the Grand Re-Opening Celebration of the Town’s newly renovated south-end Fire Station-2 located at 900 Point Judith Rd.

For a time-lapse look of the project build, check out the Fire Station-2 Renovation Project Video Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oc2Dr52MA8oE1NzxCxqgR_pyLz2folY1

The entire $2.1M construction project from design to build was funded entirely through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) State Fiscal Recovery Funds of 2021 in combination with the Municipal Public Safety Infrastructure grant program established within Governor McKee's Fiscal Year 2024 enacted budget.

Public Safety for our community - remains a high priority.........
This was reflected in the universal desire and willingness of this and previous Town Councils to approve the appropriations of local ARPA funds earmarked for our community to be directed into this project with the recommendation and support of our Town Manager, James Tierney. Without that commitment, this project and others like it, could not be achieved.

We would like to thank our Congressional delegate; especially Sen. Jack Reed for his relentless support of the Fire Service and our dedicated state and local government officials, clergy, and active & retired members of NFD and surrounding fire departments for attending. Most of all - thank you to the residents of our community for your continued support of our firefighters.

Tours of the facility and light refreshments had followed.

Thank you.

The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency is once again supporting the National Weather Service in hosting two Skywarn Weather Spotter courses within Rhode Island.

2026 Rhode Island National Weather Service Skywarn Weather Spotter Courses:

4/21/26 6pm-8pm : Union Fire Headquarters, 131 Asa Pond Rod, South Kingstown

4/28/26 6pm-8pm: Smithfield Police Headquarters, 215 Pleasant View Ave, Smithfield

What is SKYWARN®?
SKYWARN® is a National Weather Service (NWS) program of trained volunteer severe weather observers that support their local community and emergency responders by providing the NWS with timely and accurate ground truth reports of severe weather and its impacts.
These reports, when integrated with modern NWS technology, are used to inform communities of the proper actions to take when severe weather occurs. The key focus of the SKYWARN® program is to save lives and property through the use of the observations and reports of trained volunteers.

Who is eligible and how do I get started?
NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service to join the SKYWARN® program. Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches and nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are encouraged to become a spotter.

Congratulations to our Firefighters’ 5th place finish at the ALA’s Stair Climb event today.
They raised just over $1,500 to support the “Fight for Air”.
Great individual finish times by all. Terrific performance by FF. Kirsten Perry who finished as the overall fastest female firefighter at the event.

Well done!

******** SAFETY MESSAGE - For the Public **********
Flood Watch from 3/16/2026 5:00 AM to 3/17/2026 8:00 AM EDT for Washington County, RI.
https://inws.ncep.noaa.gov/a/a.php?i=125220704
Wind Safety (Peak: 10 PM tonight – 4 AM Tuesday)
Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or tie down patio furniture, trash cans, and outdoor decorations. These can become dangerous projectiles in 60+ mph winds.
Downed Power Lines: Treat all downed wires as live and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away and report them immediately to RI Energy at 1-800-465-1212 or call 911.
Vehicle Safety: If you must drive, keep both hands on the wheel and maintain extra distance from high-profile vehicles (trucks, SUVs, trailers).

Flooding Safety (Today through Tuesday)
Turn Around, Don't Drown: Never drive or walk-through flooded roadways. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and 12 inches can sweep away most vehicles.
Check Storm Drains: If it is safe to do so, clear leaves and debris from storm drains near your property to help reduce localized street flooding.
Sump Pumps: Ensure your sump pump is operational. If you have a battery backup, check that it is fully charged.
Basements: Move valuable items and electronics off basement floors to higher shelving.
Power Outages & Home Safety
Generator Safety: Never operate a generator indoors, in a garage, or near open windows. Keep it at least 20 feet away from the house to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Charge Devices: Fully charge your cell phones and portable power banks now.
