OUTDOOR BURNING RESTRICTIONS IN PACIFIC COUNTY
Pacific County will be implementing burning restrictions (Burn Ban) effective at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, July 18ᵗʰ, 2026 until further notice.

The burn ban applies to outdoor debris burning.

Recreational campfires are allowed if built in improved fire pits in designated campgrounds, such as those typically found in local, county, and state parks and in commercial campgrounds. On
private land, recreational fires are permitted when built according to the following regulations:

• Recreational fires must be in a metal, stone, or masonry-lined fire pit such as those in improved campgrounds or available at home and garden stores.
• Size may not exceed 3 feet in diameter by 2 feet in height.
• Fires must be at least 25 feet from a structure or other combustible material and have at least 20 feet of clearance from overhead fuels such as tree limbs, patio covers or carports.
• Fires must be attended at all times by a responsible person at least 16 years old who has the ability and tools to extinguish the fire. Tools include a shovel and either five gallons of water
or a connected and charged water hose.
• Portable outdoor fireplaces, also known as patio fireplaces, designed to burn solid wood should
not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material and must always be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Completely extinguish recreational fires by covering them with water or moist soil and stirring with a shovel until all parts are cool to the touch.
• Self-contained camp stoves are a safe and easy alternative to campfires.

RESTRICCIONES PARA LA QUEMA AL AIRE LIBRE EN EL CONDADO DE PACIFIC

El Condado de Pacific implementará restricciones para la quema (prohibición de quemas) a partir de las 12:01 a. m. del sábado 18 de julio de 2026 y hasta nuevo aviso.

La prohibición de quemas se aplica a la quema de desechos al aire libre.

Se permiten las fogatas recreativas si se hacen en fogones mejorados dentro de campamentos designados, como los que normalmente se encuentran en parques locales, del condado y estatales, así como en campamentos comerciales. En terrenos privados, las fogatas recreativas están permitidas cuando se construyan de acuerdo con las siguientes regulaciones:

• Las fogatas recreativas deben hacerse en un fogón de metal, piedra o mampostería, como los que se encuentran en campamentos mejorados o los disponibles en tiendas para el hogar y jardinería.
• El tamaño no puede exceder los 3 pies de diámetro por 2 pies de altura.
• Las fogatas deben estar al menos a 25 pies de cualquier estructura u otro material combustible y contar con al menos 20 pies de espacio libre de combustibles elevados, como ramas de árboles, cubiertas de patios o cocheras.
• Las fogatas deben estar supervisadas en todo momento por una persona responsable de al menos 16 años de edad que tenga la capacidad y las herramientas para extinguir el fuego. Las herramientas incluyen una pala y cinco galones de agua o una manguera de agua conectada y con presión.
• Las chimeneas portátiles para exteriores, también conocidas como chimeneas para patio, diseñadas para quemar madera sólida, no deben utilizarse a menos de 15 pies de una estructura o material combustible y siempre deben usarse de acuerdo con las instrucciones del fabricante.

Active Shooter Training to be Conducted at Columbia Memorial Hospital

The Astoria Police and Astoria Fire Departments are partnering with Columbia Memorial Hospital and Medix Ambulance Service to conduct an active shooter and mass casualty response exercise on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The training will take place at the CMH Cancer Center, located at 1905 Exchange Street in Astoria.

This exercise provides a valuable opportunity for public safety personnel and healthcare professionals throughout Clatsop County to train together in a realistic, coordinated response to a critical incident. While the scenario is focused on an active shooter event, the skills, communication strategies, and lessons learned are applicable to a wide range of emergencies that first responders and medical personnel may encounter.

Community members should be aware that the training will involve the use of simunition training rounds (blanks) within the facility and the placement of role players portraying victims in and around the building. Residents and visitors in the area may observe an increased presence of emergency vehicles, law enforcement personnel, and firefighters, as well as training activity throughout the exercise.

Safety officers and designated observers will be on site to monitor the training and address any concerns from members of the public. There is no threat to the community, and all activities associated with the exercise are planned and controlled.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) confirms the tragic loss of Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting #720, who was killed Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle in Tacoma.

Trooper Guting was standing outside of her patrol car investigating a two-vehicle collision when she was struck just before 7:30 p.m. on southbound State Route 509 near milepost 2, south of the Port of Tacoma. Individuals on scene rendered aid, but the trooper ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The Tacoma Police Department (TPD) is taking over the investigation of the incident.

Trooper Guting, 29, began her career with the WSP as a trooper cadet in January 2024. She graduated with the 119th Trooper Basic Training Class, commissioning that same year on Oct. 30th. In that time, served in WSP District 1 in Tacoma.

Tara’s loss is deeply felt within the WSP family, and especially by her husband, Timothy, who himself serves as a Deputy State Fire Marshal at the WSP Fire Training Academy in North Bend.

Tara Guting was born on July 19, 1996, to Russell and Cheryl Hirata in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended Mililani High School in Mililani, Hawaii, and graduated on May 25, 2014. She began a career of service by enlisting in the Army National Guard on Oct. 22, 2014, where she served honorably as a Signal Intelligence Analyst until Oct, 21, 2022. Her dedication to service and commitment to her duties were evident throughout her eight-year military career.

She married Timothy on Aug. 21, 2019, at the Fire Training Academy.

She answered her final call Friday night, marking the 34th time in WSP’s 105-year history that the agency lost one of its own in line of duty.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to Timothy, Tara’s extended family, her friends, her academy classmates, to District 1 Captain Gundermann, and his entire team,” said WSP Chief John R. Batiste. “We will never forget Badge #720 – Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting.

“The sky has poured rain on us all for the past two weeks… And with this loss, now tears flood our souls.”
