Earlier this afternoon, Nashua Fire Rescue responded to a fire involving a City trash collection truck. The fire was traced to improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries that ignited while the truck was in service.

Lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in items such as cell phones, laptops, power tools, and rechargeable household devices, can pose a serious fire hazard when damaged or compacted—especially in trash or recycling trucks. Once ignited, these batteries can rapidly spread fire and are difficult to extinguish.

We want to remind residents that lithium-ion batteries should never be placed in household trash or recycling bins.

Proper disposal options include:
• Bringing batteries to designated household hazardous waste collection sites
• Utilizing local retail drop-off programs that accept rechargeable batteries
• Participating in community collection events

Improper disposal not only puts sanitation workers at risk, but also endangers first responders and the public.

We’re grateful no injuries were reported in today’s incident. Thank you to our crews and City staff for their quick actions in safely managing the situation.

For more information on proper battery disposal, please visit our solid waste or public works website.

NEWS RELEASE: ONE PERSON DECEASED AFTER APARTMENT FIRE IN NASHUA

NASHUA, N.H. – New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey, Nashua Fire Chief Steve M. Buxton, and Nashua Police Chief Kevin Rourke announce that one person is deceased, and a joint investigation is underway after a fire at a multifamily home in Nashua.

At 11:02 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2026, members of Nashua Fire Rescue responded to 24 Morgan Street for a reported fire. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the second floor of the multilevel home. Efforts to contain the fire were started immediately.

While the flames were quickly knocked down, one apartment unit was badly damaged, and the rest of the building suffered smoke damage.

During a search of the building, fire personnel located an adult female deceased on the second floor. The victim was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identified as Stephanie D. Lemay, 46, of Nashua. Lemay’s cause of death was determined to be smoke inhalation, and the manner was accidental.

Approximately 10 residents are also displaced due to the fire.

Investigators with the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and are leading the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire. While all aspects of the fire remain under investigation, it is not currently considered suspicious.

No first responders were hurt. Members of the Nashua Fire Marshal’s Office and the Nashua Police Department provided assistance at the scene, and station coverage was provided by the Tyngsboro, Massachusetts Fire Department.

A Day of Tradition, Honor, and New Beginnings

Today, Nashua Fire Rescue proudly celebrated the graduation of our newest recruits from Rookie School and the pinning of our newest Fire Alarm Operators.

The day began with a moment of reflection and remembrance as the recruits visited the 9/11 Memorial at the East Hollis Fire Station. From there, they joined Chief Buxton for a run to the Nashua Firefighters Memorial on Concord Street, honoring the sacrifices of those who came before them and recognizing the legacy they are now entrusted to carry forward.

This afternoon, family, friends, and members of Nashua Fire Rescue gathered to celebrate their accomplishments as they officially graduated from Rookie School and our new Fire Alarm Operators received their badges. These milestones represent months of hard work, dedication, and commitment to serving our community.

As they begin the next chapter of their careers, we congratulate each of them on their achievements and thank their families and loved ones for the support that helped make this day possible.

Please join us in welcoming the newest members of Nashua Fire Rescue and congratulating our newly pinned Fire Alarm Operators. We wish them safe, successful, and rewarding careers in service to the City of Nashua.

This morning, members of Nashua Fire Rescue joined our partners from Nashua Police Department and other public safety professionals at New Searles Elementary School to welcome students and staff to school during the annual Hometown Heroes event.

Events like these provide a wonderful opportunity for first responders to connect with the community, build positive relationships with students, and help kick off the school day with smiles and excitement.

Adding to the special nature of the event, several off-duty Nashua Fire Rescue members who participated this morning are proud New Searles Elementary alumni, making the welcome back even more meaningful as they returned to the school where their own educational journeys began.

We wish all students, teachers, and staff a safe, successful, and last couple of weeks of the school year!

Mutual aid is not always about responding to fires — sometimes it’s about helping prevent them before they happen.

Yesterday, the Nashua Fire Marshal’s Office joined several surrounding communities in assisting the Manchester Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office during the City of Manchester’s annual Taco Tour. This event draws thousands of visitors and hundreds of food vendors from across the region.

Events of this size require extensive planning, coordination, and fire prevention efforts to help ensure a safe experience for everyone attending.

Thank you to the Manchester Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office for including us once again this year. We appreciate the continued partnership and regional cooperation.

Exciting progress for Nashua Fire Rescue.

Engine 1 is currently at the Pierce Manufacturing facility in Appleton, Wisconsin, where it is undergoing the final stages of construction. This phase brings the apparatus one step closer to serving the community with enhanced capability and reliability.

Members of the Nashua Fire apparatus committee will soon travel to Appleton to conduct a detailed inspection, review specifications, and officially accept the truck. Their visit ensures that every component meets the department’s standards before Engine 1 is placed into service.

This will be the last construction update.

Last evening, the Nashua Fire Rescue family came together for our Recognition Night — an opportunity to honor the dedication, professionalism, and commitment shown every day by the members of our department.

Over the past couple of years our personnel have responded to many difficult and challenging emergencies throughout the city. Through those incidents, our members continued to demonstrate tremendous courage, compassion, teamwork, and professionalism while serving the residents and visitors of Nashua. Recognition Night provided an important opportunity to reflect on those efforts and recognize the people behind the badge who answer the call day in and day out.

The men and women of Nashua Fire Rescue continue to represent this department and our community with pride, integrity, and dedication. We are equally grateful to the families and loved ones who support our members through the long hours, difficult calls, and time spent away from home.

We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible. Events like these are a great reminder of the strong support system behind our department and the importance of recognizing the incredible work being done across all divisions of Nashua Fire Rescue.

A special thank you to Dave Morin for capturing the evening through his outstanding photography and helping preserve these memorable moments.

Congratulations to all those recognized, and thank you to every member of Nashua Fire Rescue for your continued dedication, sacrifice, and service.
