“Did You Know?” Ecology Fun Facts: Mockingbird edition! 🐦

Here in Tennessee, the northern mockingbird has proudly represented the state ever since it was named the official state bird in 1933. Beyond its cheerful songs, this feisty little bird plays a real role in local ecosystems, controlling insect populations and spreading seeds through its varied diet. Managed conservation of green spaces across the state, from backyard gardens to city parks, can provide the conditions that allow these spirited songbirds continue to thrive for generations of Tennesseans to enjoy.

“Did You Know?” Ecology Fun Facts: Virginia Opossum edition! ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ

Here in Tennessee, the humble Virginia opossum quietly earns its keep as one of our most underrated conservation allies. As the state's only native marsupial, it roams everything from the Smoky Mountain foothills to backyard gardens in Nashville. Despite their sometimes-unfair reputation as pests, opossums pose little threat to humans and play a real role in keeping local ecosystems balanced. Protecting their habitat and allowing them to perform their natural functions helps maintain healthy ecosystems and supports the wildlife that contribute to Tennessee’s environmental well‑being.
