Celebrating holidays and festivals students share with their families is a simple and important way to make connections between home and school. Take some time to find out what and how your families celebrate together and highlight those throughout the year in your classroom.
Next week is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. NPL has books, events, and learning tools about Juneteenth available for everyone! Be sure to check out the blog posts about Juneteenth in children's literature and resources for teaching!

Did you know that NPL has resources for learning English and preparing for citizenship at every branch? The Pathway for New Americans program is just one of the many community resources we are proud to offer.

Look for the New Americans corner booths at your local branch and help us spread the word with families at your school! NPL has books, DVDs, and online resources for English language learning and citizenship and immigration information. Some branches even host English classes led by non-profit partners. It's and we're looking at strategies to grow vocabulary for ELL students. Our top 2 strategies are play and reading aloud! Both can be simple to implement with just a little planning, are fun, and benefit all students!

We all learn better when we use the skills in practice. For children that's by playing! Include items with words you're introducing in play centers to give children chances to use the vocabulary in context. Use descriptive words as they play and give plenty of time for them to respond.

Books provide opportunities to introduce words we don't typically use in everyday speech. When you choose a read aloud book, look for one that has rich vocabulary you can highlight. Read it more than once and challenge the class to use the new words throughout the day!

This June our focus is on supporting English Language Learners in the early childhood classroom! English Language Learners, or ELLs, are children for whom English is not the primary language. This is not a deficit, however. It merely signals an area of growth and development. Young children can learn more than one language at the same time, and bilingualism is an asset for cognitive development, executive functioning, and cultural competency.

All the professional literature points to the value of using students' home language to support English language learning. Bring your students' home languages into the early childhood classroom by intentionally creating a welcoming, language-rich environment. Greet children using their home languages, for example. Label classroom items in English as well other languages. To support the learning of new vocabulary in English, use visuals like photographs and use gestures when communicating. Creating a welcoming, language-rich early childhood classroom environment is useful for all children's literacy development, whether or not they are monolingual or bilingual.

This week, we're wrapping up our celebration of AANHPI month by exploring with our senses.

🌺Use maps and globes to see from where the AANHPI community comes. Identify groups and organizations led by local members of the community in your city. Are there restaurants or shops nearby? Can you find them on a map of your city?

🌺In the classroom and around your school or child care center, it's likely that several plants originally came from Asia or the Pacific Islands. Look around. Do you see bamboo? Camellias? Pothos? Hostas? Rubber plants (aka Ficus)? Encourage children to touch and smell the plants.

🌺Enjoy a snack of foods that originally came from Asia or the Pacific Islands. Many familiar fruits--pineapple, papaya, coconut, banana, orange--are from these places. Or, visit an AANHPI-owned market and bring fruits that may be less familiar (such as lychee, dragon fruit, or Asian pear) to enjoy.

We hope you enjoyed our celebration of AANHPI month!
