Last week, the John Lewis Center for Social Justice at Fisk University hosted the Strategic Nonviolence Academy for a great group of young and spirited, freedom fighters that traveled to Nashville. I'm super grateful that my Oliver Fellows, Sariya and Kelley, were able to participate in this four day immersive training to learn new organizing skills.

Being an Oliver Fellow is much more than working alongside a state senator, of an investment in their own leadership development.

Thanks to Dr. Sekou Franklin, Joe Worthy and the Strategic Nonviolence Academy staff (Dylan Sellers, Arenne Flanders, Destinee Henton, and Nehemiah Stark) for creating space for young people to imagine a better future is possible!

Juneteenth is not just a holiday — it is a history lesson and a call to action.

When I serve in the Tennessee General Assembly, I carry with me the truth that freedom has never been freely given. It has been demanded, organized, litigated, and legislated — inch by inch, generation by generation. Juneteenth reminds us where that fight began and challenges us to be honest about how much further we have to go.

In a state where voting rights are under attack, where our children's history is being erased from classrooms, and where economic inequality continues to fall along racial lines — we cannot afford to treat Juneteenth as a day of celebration alone. It must also be a day of recommitment.

Today I recommit to the people of District 19: to fight for your freedom in every bill, every vote, and every floor speech. Because liberation is not a moment — it's a movement.
