Check out this brand new spotlight of four time AmeriCorps alum, Saylor, who served with CAC AmeriCorps and Emerald Youth Foundation. Saylor talks about what drew her to service, how her service connected her to career opportunity, and how, as a member with City of Knoxville - Government, Urban Forestry, she gets to "speak for the trees" and see her impact years after her service. 🌲🌳😍🌳🌲

Special thanks to Nicki Fiocco with the AmeriCorps Connections podcast for highlighting several Tennessee alums.πŸ’š

What's in a Name? AmeriCorps Member vs. AmeriCorps Volunteer?

Volunteer Tennessee is shifting away from using the term AmeriCorps Member to AmeriCorps Volunteer (with a capital "V") when referencing individuals serving in our AmeriCorps programs.

This is challenging β€” we have utilized the term "member" since our inception over 3 decades ago. The change by the AmeriCorps Agency is intended to simplify messaging and align with the other national service programs (AmeriCorps Seniors and AmeriCorps VISTA). By utilizing common language, we are more easily able to communicate program objectives and impact across the service streams to stakeholders. While the language may be changing, the impact is not. Volunteer Tennessee is proud to support the thousands of AmeriCorps Volunteers (past, present and future) that serve in local communities every day to improve the lives of all Tennesseans.

In addition, AmeriCorps Volunteers will continue to receive a living allowance to help pay for core needs, as well as receive an education award at the conclusion of their service, core benefits that have long been an important part of national service in the US. πŸ”΄βšͺπŸ”΅

This year, 9/11 Day will be hosting 2 major meal packing events in Tennessee, 1 in Nashville, 1 in Memphis, to transform the anniversary of one of our country's darkest days into America's largest days of doing good.πŸ™οΈ

If you would like to volunteer to make a difference with one of these events, each convening takes nearly 90 individuals on 9/10 and 9/11 just to make it all come together. This is a major undertaking and a great opportunity to connect with community across the Volunteer State, and US, around the collective purpose of helping our neighbors.
