As the new school year approaches, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone of an important safety law that protects our children every day.

🛑 When a school bus stops, YOU STOP.

✔️ On a two-lane road – traffic in BOTH directions must stop
✔️ On a multi-lane road without a barrier – ALL lanes must stop
✔️ On a divided highway with a median or barrier – only traffic behind the bus must stop, but drivers on the opposite side must proceed with caution

These laws are not optional — they are in place to protect children getting on and off the bus.

⚠️ Failing to stop for a school bus can result in serious penalties and, more importantly, can put a child’s life at risk.

Congratulations to our neighboring department and friends on improving their ISO rating!

🎉 Great News for Atkinson County! 🚒

The Atkinson County Fire Department is proud to announce that our Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification has officially improved from a Class 5/5X to a Class 4/4X following our ISO audit conducted in March 2026, which evaluated our 2025 operations, training, equipment, staffing, emergency communications, and fire protection capabilities.

This achievement is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of our firefighters, volunteers, officers, county leadership, and the continued support of our community.

What does this mean for our citizens?
🏡 Many homeowners may see a reduction in their homeowners insurance premiums, as many insurance companies use ISO ratings when determining insurance costs. While savings will vary by insurance provider and individual policy, we encourage all property owners to contact their insurance carrier and ask how the new Class 4/4X rating may affect their coverage.

This accomplishment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to improving emergency services and providing the highest level of fire protection possible for the citizens of Atkinson County.

We extend our sincere appreciation to every firefighter, volunteer, county official, mutual aid partner, and citizen who has supported the growth of our department. This milestone belongs to the entire community.

Our firefighters are volunteers but we like to show our pride in our station, look professional, and let others know we are part of the Berrien County Fire Department. Our T-shirts were getting a little faded form being worn and we have some new firefighters so we decided it was time for some new shirts. We got our standard blue and grey T-shirts with Berrien County Station 51 on the front and EBFD on the back to represent the East Berrien Fire District. This time we decided to also include an upgrade. We ordered all of our Firefighters a grey Button Up Shirt so that we would have something nicer to where when the occasion called for it. We would like to thank Downtown Dogwood for doing such a great job on the shirts.

Note: No county funds were used to purchase the shirts.

We want to thank Ms. Cheryl Luke, tonight we did a training burn on her property and she made homemade orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream for us. It was very delicious and very much appreciated. Thank You Again Ms. Cheryl!!

Our office was notified by one of our Citizens that they received an email and phone correspondence in reference to missing jury duty. They sent interesting documentation that supported a Federal arrest warrant. Then the person who was represented as a U. S. Marshal, demanded $6,000 dollars to clear it up. Thankfully, our Citizen was sharper than they were and realized it was a scam. Again, law enforcement will never demand monies for anything of the sort. If anything at all comes up like this, get reassurance by contacting the Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement.
