Tennessee Human Rights Commission Safeguarding individuals from discrimination through education and enforcement

The Tennessee Human Rights Commission is an independent state agency created in 1963 to encourage, promote and advise the public of their human rights. In 1978 the Commission transformed in an enforcement agency through the passing of the Tennessee Human Rights Act, and later, the Tennessee Disability Act, which together prohibit discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodation on t

he basis of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, s*x, disability, familial status (housing only), and age (over 40 in employment). The Commission also ensures the State of Tennessee’s compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin by state agencies receiving federal financial assistance.

On June 30, 2025, the Tennessee Human Rights Commission will dissolve as a state agency. The Commission's anti-discrimination enforcement duties will transfer to the Civil Rights Enforcement Division with the Tennessee Attorney General. Title VI compliance for the State of Tennessee will transfer to the Department of Human Resources. These changes will go into effect on July 1, 2025.

On this day 57 years ago, the Fair Housing Act was signed into law. Passed one week after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 11, 1968, the law prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing. At the Commission, we carry on the legacy of the Act by enforcing the state's equivalent law, the Tennessee Human Rights Act.

Happy Fair Housing Month!!! This month we celebrate fair housing in honor of the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, also known as the Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, s*x, disability and familial status.

At THRC, we enforce fair housing laws to ensure housing providers are aware of their responsibilities and that citizens of Tennessee are safeguarded from discrimination.
