We enjoyed attending the Tennessee Highway Safety Office Bike/Pedestrian Summit last week with counterparts from across the state to support the development of their update to the comprehensive 3-year Bicycle/Pedestrian Strategic Plan. This update will prioritize saving lives and protecting vulnerable road users across the state.

Making a report in instances of suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation is the right thing to do, and it’s easy. Programs such as Adult Protective Services (APS) and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman are here to help. To report suspected abuse in the community setting, call APS at 1-888-277-8366, or in long term care facilities, call 615-850-3918.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time to shine a light on an issue that affects millions but often goes unseen. Elder abuse can take many forms—physical, emotional, financial, or neglect—and the warning signs are not always obvious. Unexplained injuries, sudden changes in finances, or emotional withdrawal can all be indicators that something isn’t right. Abuse often hides in plain sight, and awareness is the first step toward prevention. Learn the signs, speak up, and be part of the solution.
Here are 5 steps you can take to prevent elder abuse:
1) Listen to older adults and caregivers to understand their challenges and provide support.
2) Educate others about the signs of abuse and how to get help.
3) Report suspected abuse or neglect as soon as possible.
4) Build a community that fosters social connections and supports.
5) Reach out to professional services for support where available.

Launching June 15, the campaign will amplify a clear, consistent message: federal agencies will Never EVER call, text, or email to demand personal or financial information, ask for money, or tell you to move money to “protect it.” Only a scammer will.
