Happy Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary!

Today we celebrate the proud legacy of service, safety, and dedication that began June 23, 1939, when Congress created the Coast Guard Reserve, a volunteer force of civilian boaters committed to keeping America’s waterways safe.

In 1941, the name changed to the Coast Guard Auxiliary, marking the birth of the organization we honor today.

Throughout World War II, more than 50,000 volunteers stepped up to patrol our coasts, guard our ports, and rescue downed pilots. Their courage and commitment set the foundation for generations to follow.

From post‑war years to the present, the Auxiliary has remained a steadfast force for:

Public boating safety education
Environmental protection
Disaster relief and community support

Thank you to all past and present Auxiliarists whose service continues to protect lives and strengthen our nation.

Governor Bill Lee has signed new legislation expanding eligibility for interment in our State Veterans Cemeteries, ensuring more National Guard, Reserve members, and eligible dependents receive the dignity and recognition they’ve earned through their service.

From responding to emergencies here at home to defending our freedoms across the nation, their dedication has strengthened Tennessee in countless ways. This new law ensures their service is honored without placing a financial burden on their loved ones, providing a lasting place of remembrance and respect.

To all who have served, and to the families who sacrifice alongside them, we are grateful.

Does your organization serve service members, Veterans, and military families?

Dan Bishop, a Tri Stars and Stripes Council member and Veteran himself, walks through how organizations can register on the Tennessee Veterans Connect Portal so the people you serve can find you.

The portal is most useful when the network behind it is strong. If your organization supports Tennessee Veterans, your listing helps connect those who have served to the resources they need.

On June 14, 1775, the U.S. Army was established, making it the oldest of the six branches of our Armed Forces. For over 250 years, the Army has stood strong in defense of our nation, our freedoms, and our future.

Today, we honor and celebrate all who have worn the uniform, past and present. To every Soldier, Veteran, and their families: thank you for your unwavering service and sacrifice.

Today, we want to recognize Flag Day, the anniversary of the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777.

While not a federal holiday, this day is an important opportunity for all of us to honor the history, values, and unity our flag represents. Citizens, businesses, and government agencies are encouraged to proudly display the American flag in recognition of the day.

However you choose to mark the day, Flag Day is a moment to reflect on our shared heritage and honor those who have served under our nation’s flag.
