The Abraham’s Window brotherhood has welcomed its newest members. This month, MDHA’s Resident Services Department hosted the second annual induction ceremony for the program, which serves teen boys living in MDHA housing. The inductees received a certificate and medal before reciting the Abraham’s Window pledge, which ends with the statement, “I commit to becoming a young man who leads with character, lives with purpose and leaves a positive legacy.”

Last year’s inaugural group of teens was also recognized with the gift of an official Abraham’s Window green jacket to celebrate one year of focusing on education, personal responsibility and community service. The ceremony featured an inspirational keynote address by MDHA’s President and CEO, Dr. Troy D. White.

Today, MDHA celebrated a major milestone in our revitalization efforts at Cayce Place by cutting the ribbon on Park Point East, the largest development so far in the Cayce Transformation. Our President and CEO, Dr. Troy D. White, was joined by MDHA Board Members, Freddie O'Connell, Mayor of Metropolitan Nashville & Davidson County, Council Member Clay Capp, Tennessee Housing Development Agency Executive Director Ralph Perrey and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Regional Administrator Tiffany Cobb to mark the special occasion.

Before the ribbon was cut, LaShonda, a current Cayce Place resident who will soon move into Park Point East, shared a powerful message about what this new development means for her community.

“When I sit out on my new private balcony and look towards the Nashville skyline, I will constantly be reminded that, although we are classified as low-income, the leadership here in Nashville did not forget about us,” said LaShonda. “They have allowed us to be a witness and a testament to the vision to create a successful community that will provide a lasting legacy for generations to come.”

Park Point East features 24 townhomes and two apartment buildings, totaling 203 new affordable units in East Nashville. 115 of those units have been reserved for current Cayce Place families. MDHA has now surpassed 800 new units built as part of the Cayce Transformation, with more than half of those units set aside for current residents.

Next week, MDHA will celebrate an exciting milestone in the Cayce Transformation with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Park Point East, the transformation’s newest and largest residential development to date.

The celebration comes just days after the 85th anniversary of the opening of the original units at Cayce Place. On Aug. 15, 1941, the first 350 units at Cayce Place were completed, and the first residents moved in. Those original buildings were constructed between S. Sixth, S. Seventh, Dew and Sylvan streets. Today, about half of that original phase has been replaced by the Cherry Oak Apartments and Park Point East developments.

As we celebrate the progress of the Cayce Transformation, it's worth taking a moment to reflect on where it all began.

With back-to-school season in full swing, we want to wish this year’s Peaches Manning Scholarship recipients the best of luck as they head off to college!

The recipients were recently celebrated at a graduation ceremony hosted by the MDHA Resident Services Department. They were also invited to the MDHA Board of Commissioners meeting to be recognized for their accomplishments.

The scholarship is funded by the Resident Associations at MDHA properties and is matched by MDHA. Residents who are graduating from high school and pursuing higher education apply for the scholarship and are selected by a committee.

Peaches Manning was a longtime community liaison and MDHA employee. She worked with the RAs to establish the MDHA Scholarship Committee in 1985, and following her passing in 2015, the scholarship was renamed by the RA Presidents Council to honor Ms. Manning’s legacy.

If you have a housing choice voucher, you are now eligible to ride WeGo Transit for free through the Journey Pass Program! All you have to do is bring your photo ID and your voucher approval/recertification letter to a Journey Pass registration event. All MDHA residents are also eligible for the program. Check the link in our comments for more information.

We are now less than one week away from the start of the MNPS school year here in Davidson County! As a reminder, most elementary schools and high schools will have new start times, while middle school start and dismissal times remain the same.
