Berrien Primary School Families and Berrien County Community,

We are pleased to share that Berrien Primary School is ready to be occupied by students and will reopen as usual for classes on Tuesday, August 18.

Over the weekend and during Monday’s Digital Learning Day, multiple agencies and professionals have worked diligently to ensure the building is safe, clean and ready for our students and staff. As part of the mitigation and restoration efforts, ceiling tiles and insulation were replaced, the building underwent extensive deep cleaning by professional agencies and air quality was professionally evaluated to ensure a safe environment for students and staff.

We are extremely grateful for the many individuals and agencies who worked long hours all weekend, often behind the scenes, to make this happen in such a timely manner. From our first responders and safety professionals to our maintenance, custodial, administrative and restoration teams, your dedication and commitment to getting our students back where they belong is deeply appreciated.

We also want to thank our Berrien Primary School families and community for your patience, flexibility and understanding throughout this time.

We look forward to welcoming our students and staff back to Berrien Primary School on Tuesday morning!

Berrien Primary School Reopening Update

Complete one activity from the Activity Guide or Teacher Guide provided with the selected book.
These activities are intended to provide simple, meaningful learning practice at home.

A two-time Emmy-nominated program of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Storyline Online features actors reading children's books to inspire a love of reading worldwide.

BERRIEN COUNTY SCHOOLS UPDATE

Words cannot adequately express our gratitude for the extraordinary response we have witnessed from our emergency services, community members, parents, faculty and staff following the fire at Berrien Primary School. The outpouring of support, cooperation and willingness to help has been truly remarkable.

Since the incident, Berrien County Schools personnel, along with restoration professionals and community partners, have worked around the clock throughout the weekend to provide a comprehensive emergency response, address fire and smoke damage, and complete the necessary environmental remediation to safely return the facility to operational condition.

Our primary objective remains clear: to restore the school as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance and minimizing disruption to our students, faculty, families and community.

The extensive restoration process includes emergency stabilization, structural drying, smoke removal, selective demolition and removal of materials that cannot be salvaged, odor mitigation and cleaning of the HVAC system. Throughout this process, special attention is being given to protecting unaffected areas through containment systems, negative air pressure and continuous air quality monitoring.

Every decision being made is centered on one priority, the health and safety of our students and staff and ensuring they return to a clean, safe learning environment.

Watching our faculty and staff work tirelessly alongside emergency personnel, restoration professionals, parents and members of our community has been an incredible reminder of what makes Berrien County special. When faced with an unexpected challenge, this community did not hesitate to come together, roll up its sleeves, and do whatever was necessary for our children.

That spirit is the very definition of our district motto:
“B” the Difference.

Over the past several days, we haven't simply said those words, we have watched our entire community live them.

To everyone who has responded, worked, volunteered, offered assistance, shared encouragement, or kept our students and staff in your thoughts: thank you.

Berrien County Schools – District Update
Monday, August 17

Dear Berrien County Schools Families,

We want to provide clarification regarding school operations for Monday, August 17, following the fire at Berrien Primary School.

Though damage is minimal, preparations for reopening the school are actively taking place. Berrien Primary School will have a Digital Learning Day on Monday, August 17 to aid in that preparation. Primary School students should remain at home and complete the digital learning activities that will be provided by their teachers.

All other Berrien County Schools will operate on a normal schedule. Students at Berrien Elementary School, Berrien Middle School, Berrien High School and Berrien Performance Learning Academy should report to school as usual on Monday.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We are continuing to work closely with emergency personnel and appropriate officials to ensure Berrien Primary School is safe for students and staff to return.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this unexpected situation. We will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.

Berrien County Schools would like to inform our families and community that Berrien Primary School was struck by lightning this afternoon, resulting in a fire at the school.
Fortunately, the incident occurred after school hours, and no students or staff were injured.

District leadership is on site and is working closely with local fire, emergency and public safety officials to assess the extent of the damage and determine the next steps.

The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. We will communicate directly with parents and the community as soon as additional information is available, including any changes or plans that may affect school on Monday.

We are grateful to our local first responders for their quick response and assistance. We appreciate the patience and support of our families and community as we work through this situation.
