One of the hallmarks of great leadership is never being afraid to learn something new.

While attending the 2026 Cannabis Regulators Association (CANNRA) External Stakeholder Meeting, TABC Executive Director Russell Thomas traded his suit jacket for a lab coat to learn more about the testing and safety processes that help protect consumers.

That commitment to understanding every aspect of the work—from the lab bench to the boardroom—helps ensure TABC is prepared for the challenges ahead as we assume full responsibility for regulating H**p-Derived Cannabinoid Products on July 1, 2026.

Because effective regulation begins with understanding every part of the process.

Getting ready for a new regulatory program doesn't happen overnight.

In less than a year, TABC has built the framework, expertise, and partnerships needed to assume full regulatory and licensing responsibility for H**p-Derived Cannabinoid Products beginning July 1, 2026.

Last week, H**p Regulatory Advisor Dr. Pritesh Kumar represented the TABC at the 2026 Cannabis Regulators Association (CANNRA) External Stakeholder Meeting, where he participated in panel discussions and participated with other regulatory leaders from across the country, sharing Tennessee's perspective while continuing to collaborate and exchange product safety knowledge with the public.

As Tennessee prepares for this new chapter, our team is staying engaged, contributing to national conversations, and making sure we're ready on Day One.

— From Law Enforcement to Legal Counsel —

Jason recently joined TABC as Commission Counsel in Nashville, bringing a career shaped by public service, leadership, and real-world experience across multiple fields.

Before joining the agency, Jason spent 10 years with the Sumner County District Attorney’s Office and served 4.5 years with the Gallatin Police Department. His background also includes engineering, with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Tennessee Tech University and a Juris Doctor from the Nashville School of Law.

Throughout his career, Jason has built a reputation for being steady, prepared, and mission-focused. His commitment to service was recognized at Gallatin PD, where he became the first officer to receive the Valorous Service Award for extraordinary actions in the line of duty.

Jason’s unique combination of legal, law enforcement, and technical experience brings a valuable perspective to the Commission Counsel team, and we’re proud to have him at TABC.

— Supporting Prevention Through Partnership —

TABC Director of Communications Aaron Rummage recently presented an update on the agency's H**p Program and V**e Operations at the quarterly meeting of the Statewide Tennessee Prevention Advisory Council at Ellington Agricultural Center.
The meeting brought together regional directors and leaders from substance use prevention coalitions across Tennessee. Working under the guidance of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, these coalitions play an important role in reducing dependence on harmful and potentially lethal substances, including alcohol, to***co, and prescription drugs.

As TABC's regulatory responsibilities continue to evolve, opportunities to engage with prevention professionals and community leaders help strengthen collaboration, share knowledge, and support a safer Tennessee.

Thank you to the Statewide Tennessee Prevention Advisory Council and prevention coalition leaders for their dedication to protecting and improving the health and well-being of Tennesseans.

— Four Generations of Law Enforcement —

Special Agent Lawson joined TABC in December 2025 and serves in the Knoxville office, bringing nearly a decade of law enforcement experience and a strong investigative background to the agency.

Before joining TABC, SA Lawson served with both the LaFollette Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, where her assignments included Patrol, Criminal Investigations, and School Resource Officer duties. Her experience across multiple areas of law enforcement has shaped the steady, adaptable approach she brings to her work today.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Bethel University, along with an associate degree in science focused on pre-engineering. Beyond her professional accomplishments, law enforcement is deeply rooted in her family history—SA Lawson is a fourth-generation law enforcement officer and the first and only female in her family to serve.

Her experience, commitment to public service, and trailblazing role within her family’s legacy make SA Lawson a strong addition to the Knoxville team, and we’re proud to have her representing TABC.

— A Strong Addition to the Chattanooga Team —

Since joining TABC in December 2025 as a Special Agent in the Chattanooga office, Special Agent Still has brought a strong foundation in criminal justice, public service, and professionalism to the agency.

SA Still earned both his associate degree and bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice before graduating summa cm laude from Lee University. During his time there, he was recognized with the Behavioral and Social Science Department Discipline Award in Criminal Justice—an achievement that reflects both his work ethic and dedication to the field.

Before joining TABC, he served with the Cleveland Police Department, gaining valuable law enforcement experience and strengthening the service-driven mindset he brings to his role today.

SA Still's combination of academic achievement, discipline, and commitment to public service makes him a strong addition to the Chattanooga team, and we’re proud to have him representing TABC.

— Say Hello to Alyssa —

Since joining TABC as an L&P Specialist in Nashville in March, Alyssa has brought a strong mix of precision, professionalism, and drive to the team.

Alyssa earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University, along with minors in Mental Health Services and Gender Studies. Before joining the State of Tennessee, she gained experience in background screening for Uber and in legal intake services—roles that required attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work in fast-paced environments.

Her background in compliance and risk assessment, paired with a consistent track record of exceeding performance goals, makes her a strong addition to TABC’s mission-focused work. From Dean’s List recognition to high-performing professional roles, Alyssa has already shown she knows how to deliver results.

We’re glad to have Alyssa on the team and look forward to the impact she’ll make across Tennessee.
