Brown County Humane Society BCHS is a nonprofit animal shelter serving the homeless dogs and cats of Brown County, Indiana.

We also offer resources to help residents keep pets in their homes including low-cost spay/neuter. BCHS strives for a community where all animals are valued and treated with respect. All animals that come to the shelter are re-homed, regardless of how long it takes and no animals are euthanized due to lack of space or funds. We hold the Brown County Animal Control contract, but we are not a government agency and receive no funds from any national animal welfare organizations. Our community outreach program has reduced the number of animals coming into the shelter by 49% and the BCHS has been nationally recognized as a successful rural shelter with an outstanding save rate of 99%, compared to a national average of 60%.

Boots' idea of a perfect day is a long game of fetch followed by cozy couch snuggles. She will happily show you how 90 pounds isn't too big to be a lap dog! Smart and eager to please, Boots already knows “sit” and “touch” and loves working for treats. Training will be a joy...she’s motivated, attentive, and ready to learn anything that will make her humans proud!

Harmony is a gentle old girl who still knows how to have fun! This girl loves to roll around with a tennis ball, but her true passion is being around her people. When she meets you, she will immediately rub lovingly against your body, trying to soak up all the love she can get. Harmony is ready for a cozy home with people who will appreciate her cuddly nature (and maybe roll a tennis ball in her direction from time to time).

Hugo got a little spooky and spent some time hanging out in our toy graveyard 😂 Hugo is an independent guy who likes to keep himself entertained with some good sniffy walks and watching the world go by from a porch or a cozy couch. Hugo has done great with other dogs, and we think his laidback personality would be fine with cats with proper introductions!

MICROCHIPS MATTER 🐾

Yesterday, this sweet boy was brought to us as a stray. During his intake exam, we scanned him for a microchip, and we found one! 🎉

Turns out Theo had been reported missing from Indianapolis back on July 5th. When we called his momma with the news, she was completely shocked, then rushed right down to pick him up and take him home where he belongs. ❤️

Stories like Theo’s are exactly why microchipping matters. Collars and tags can fall off, but a microchip is a permanent form of ID that can reunite you with your pet, even months later.

✅ Is your pet microchipped?
✅ Is your contact info up to date with the microchip company? (A chip is only as good as the information linked to it!)

This is why every adoptable pet at BCHS is microchipped before going home with their new family. 💕

Rubble has bounced back from a rough start and his sweet, happy personality is now shining through. He’s a laid-back guy who loves pets, working for treats (with enthusiastic lip-smacking), and relaxing at home with his person, though he also proved he can enjoy a long park hike on a Doggy Day Out. Rubble would be a wonderful companion for someone seeking an affectionate, easygoing dog who’s ready to enjoy the good life he deserves.
