Hello, this is Trinity, the 2026 Tennessee Agricultural Museum intern. This summer, I get to share agricultural facts and information, so be on the lookout for more educational posts!

June is National Dairy Month, which makes it the perfect time to celebrate Tennessee's dairy farms. Farmers work hard to provide us with delicious milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. Tennessee is home to 170 dairy farms, with Loudon, Bradley, and McMinn counties being the top dairy-producing counties in the state. While most of our dairy products come from cows, they can also come from goats and sheep.

The next time you drink a cold glass of milk or enjoy some ice cream this summer, take a moment to think about Tennessee's dairy farmers and the hard work they do. Be sure to stop by the museum to pick up a dairy-themed coloring sheet!

The Artifact Alphabet this week is N! N is for niddy-noddy.
A niddy-noddy is a tool used to make skeins of yarn. It is made up of a central bar with two crossbars set at 90-degree angles. Niddy-noddies can be made of wood, plastic or metal. The museum has three niddy-noddies in its collection, all dating to around 1970.

We were delighted to host the Bonsai Society at the museum today! Members of the organization showcased their impressive bonsai trees and shared their knowledge about this unique art form with visitors. Buzz Buzz! Today’s Summer Friday program at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum was all about honeybees.

Participants learned about bees with Mr. Joshua from Cul2vate. They discovered that these pollinators all have different roles within the hive and even perform a little “waggle dance” to help identify their home beehive! Participants also painted honeycomb while pretending to be mini beekeepers.
The children were able to take home beekeeper hats and their paintings.

We're excited to introduce our new 2026 summer intern, Trinity!

"I am honored to be the 2026 intern at the Tennessee Agriculture Museum. I currently attend Tennessee State University, where I am majoring in Accounting with a minor in History, and I will graduate this December. After graduation, I plan to earn my CPA and pursue a career in agricultural accounting.

I’m excited for the opportunity to learn more about everything that goes into running a museum! In my free time, I enjoy gardening, swimming, and visiting new cafés.

The Artifact Alphabet this week is M! M is for milk bottles.
Tennessee has a long dairy history, and Middle Tennessee was once known for its dairy farms and production plants. The museum has several milk bottles in its collection that help tell the story of how milk was produced, bottled and delivered, sometimes right to a customer’s doorstep.

Our Summer Friday participants were definitely involved today! Thank you to everyone who came out for our special Summer Friday celebrating America's 250th birthday! We welcomed Benjamin Franklin to the Tennessee Agriculture Museum, where he told students all about his life and work. Participants then painted wooden stars and took home Colonial-themed word search puzzles and a coloring sheet.

The Artifact Alphabet this week is L! L is for lamp.
Before modern electricity and the invention of automobiles, people used carriages or buggies to get around. When traveling at night, they used oil lamps like this one to help them see. A lamp would be attached to each side of the carriage, or there might be just one near the driver.
