The I-65 Widening Project in Davidson and Sumner Counties has seen a *lot* of progress over the last few months. As we’ve widened interstate bridges, we’ve demolished the old ones. That means farewell to the old I-65 bridges over Long Hollow Pike, US 31W and E. Cedar Street. Drivers are currently driving on the new northbound and southbound lanes while work continues on the old lanes. Demo of the I-65 bridge over Mansker Creek is coming soon, while blasting continues on I-65, resulting in one rolling roadblock per weekday from 10 AM – 2 PM.

Same road, smoother drive.

Time for a traffic pattern change! Drivers in Shelby County are now using the new SB lanes of Lamar Avenue, and the shift for the NB lanes is coming in just a few weeks. These shifts allow crews to continue with grading work, utility relocations, and storm drainage installation. It’s all a part of the larger widening project from Shelby Drive to the Raines/Perkins Interchange. Once complete, this portion of Lamar Avenue will become a 6-lane divided highway, improving safety and congestion. It’s expected to be complete Summer 2028.

The SR 136 improvement project in Putnam County is VERY close to being finished. Remaining work includes completing a box bridge near Pigeon Roost Creek Road and some final paving and signal work. The roadway will soon have 5 lanes, 2 travel lanes in each direction with a dedicated center turn lane, along with improved drainage systems, streetlights, and sidewalks! The project is expected to be complete later this summer.

A safer, smoother drive: 10/10.

New traffic signals at US 41 at Jefferson Pike and US 41 at the Sam Ridley Parkway/I-24 ramps are just part of the recently completed safety improvements along SR 1/US 41 in Smyrna in Rutherford County. The project also realigned the interchange ramps, improving traffic flow through one of the town’s busiest areas.

The lights flashed yellow for several days, alerting drivers to the change, but are now fully operational. If you're traveling through the area, stay alert as drivers adjust to the new traffic pattern.

TDOT HELP and Rural Service Patrol (RSP) units will assist with traffic management during the festival and aid any motorists who require assistance. Call 511 to be connected with dispatch.

Out with the old, in with the new! Crews recently demolished the original Easley Ford Road Bridge in Polk County as part of the ongoing replacement project. The original structure dated back to 1924.

Now, the new bridge structure is in place, and crews have poured the bridge deck. Next, work will shift to grading and paving the roadway to align with the new bridge.

The entire project remains on track for completion in Fall 2027.

Crews are making progress on relocating SR 76 (US 79) near Pictsweet, supporting future growth and improving access in Crockett County. To construct a new bridge over the nearby railroad, crews needed to first raise the existing ground *40 feet,* utilizing nearly 200,000 cubic yards of soil so far! They’ve also worked to improve drainage, including creating a 2,127-foot natural stream. Work continues on the bridge over the railroad tracks. The entire project is expected to be complete late summer 2027.

From blast to build.

Rock excavation is just one step in transforming the I-75/Emory Road interchange. It made way for crews to widen ramps, install utilities, and build retaining walls in recent months. In the coming weeks, work will shift to drainage improvements on the I-75 NB off-ramp and curb construction on the south backage road. The current traffic pattern is expected to remain in place until the fall.

A TDOT HELP truck operator was happy to be in the right place at the right time, helping a woman in labor on I-40 EB in Knox County today (6/5/26). This is the dashcam video showing driver Chester Hembree as he first responded to the scene. The woman had just delivered the baby, but told Hembree the baby hadn’t cried. He cleared the baby’s airway and helped get the child to cry and breath regularly.

KPD and EMTs arrived soon after and took the mom and baby to the hospital. We’re told both were in stable condition.

Launched in 1999 and expanded this year to serve rural areas, TDOT HELP and Rural Service Patrol programs patrol all of Tennessee’s insterstates, responding to motorists in need.
