Coffee, it’s good for you!

“That morning cup of coffee may be linked to a lower risk of dying, researchers from a study published Monday in The Annals of Internal Medicine concluded. Those who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day, even with a teaspoon of sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee. Those who drank unsweetened coffee were 16 to 21 percent less likely to die during the study period, with those drinking about three cups per day having the lowest risk of death when compared with noncoffee drinkers.

Scientists don’t know exactly what makes coffee so beneficial, Dr. Goldberg said, but the answer may lie in its antioxidant properties, which can prevent or delay cell damage. Coffee beans contain high amounts of antioxidants, said Beth Czerwony, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition in Ohio, which can help break down free radicals that cause damage to cells. Over time, a buildup of free radicals can increase inflammation in the body, which can cause plaque formation related to heart disease, she said, so dietitians recommend consuming foods and beverages that are rich in antioxidants.”

The research found that those who drank moderate amounts of coffee, even with a little sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee.

Walt answers some important questions from The Natchez Democrat in this Sunday's edition:

"Sunday Focus: Voters head to polls to determine judge seat

If elected, I’m going to see a lot of that in youth court — not only dealing with children who are offenders and committing crimes, but also children who are abused and neglected.

I hope that we can provide those kids some measure of closure, whether it be through counseling or taking them out of some abusive home life or situation and placing them somewhere they can be cared for.

There’s a lot of great programs that Judge Hudson and his staff have put in place, most of which are grant funded and aren’t directly taking tax dollars from Adams County.

Those grants are in danger every year of being eliminated, so hopefully we can keep all those programs going."

"Dunmore, Brown in runoff for Adams County Court judge

NATCHEZ — In a field of six candidates, a sitting justice court judge and a practicing assistant district attorney took approximately 67 percent of the vote for the Adams County Court bench.

Candidates Patricia Dunmore and Walt Brown will take the election to a runoff Nov. 25.

Adams County Court Judge candidate Judge Patricia Dunmore joins hands with Gilda Myers during her watch party on election night Tuesday. Dunmore is heading to a runoff election with fellow candidate Walt Brown in three weeks.

Dunmore received 2,988 votes, or 36.59 percent of the unofficial results. Brown took 2,478 votes, or 30.34 percent.

The county court judge hears some civil and criminal matters and also oversees the youth court system.

The results for other candidates were:

-Lamar Bullen, 937 votes, or 11.47 percent

-Brandi Lewis, 760 votes, or 9.31 percent

-Scott Pintard, 331 votes, or 4.05 percent

-Scott Slover, 671 votes, or 8.22 percent

Brown said the campaign has given him a chance to appreciate how blessed he is.

“I have been blessed to have a lot of people work with me, especially my wife, daughters and parents,” he said. “I have been blessed to have help from friends, neighbors, people I grew up with and people I have gotten to know through the years. You can’t see everybody by yourself, and they’ve helped me with my campaign.”

Brown said he was happy with Tuesday’s results and looked forward to the next three weeks and the ultimate end result of the campaign.

“I want to extend my congratulations to the entire field of candidates, and I want to thank them for the clean, friendly campaigns they did,” he said. “I wish them all the best.”
