🚁🚨🚑EMS WEEK🚑🚨🚁

The last paramedic we want to recognize is our fearless leader (Base Clinical Lead)-

👉Bubba Williams NRP, CCP-C👈

🩺What made you want to become a paramedic?
- Took an EMT class while between jobs working in the Oilfield and fell in love with it and continued with getting my Paramedic.

🩺How long have you been in EMS?
- 30 plus years.

🩺What’s your favorite part of the job?
- Helping people when they are having their worst day and the adrenaline rush.

🩺What’s the hardest part of working in EMS?
- Long sometimes endless shifts and keeping up with the constant changes in health care.

🩺What’s one call you’ll never forget?
- There are quite a few I wish I could forget. One rewarding call we actually didn’t transport but my partner and I sat with an elderly lady on Christmas Eve (for several hours) until her daughters arrived. Her Husband of 50+ years was terminally ill and she didn’t want him transported away from his family.

🩺What’s the best advice you’ve received in EMS?
- Always think outside the box, nothing is ever textbook.

🩺What’s something people misunderstand about paramedics?
- We have to do basically what an Emergency Room does on the side of the road, in a ditch, or wherever by ourselves.

🩺What motivates you on difficult shifts?
- the rewards you get by helping others.

🩺What’s one skill every great paramedic should have?
- Good assessment skills are a must.

🩺What’s your proudest moment in your career?
- Becoming a Flight Paramedic

🩺Energy drinks or coffee?
- Coffee hands down, and lots of it!!

🩺What’s one message you’d share with new EMS providers?
- Keep studying and always try to be better. If you get to a point where you think you “Know it all” find another job.

🩺Tell us one fun-fact about yourself or what you think your coworkers would say about you!
- A fun fact is- I have four sons and they are all in the medical field. Three are RN’s and one is a NICU respiratory therapist.

Thank you for everything you do, Bubba! ❤️🚑

🚨🚑EMS WEEK🚑🚨

The next paramedic we want to recognize for EMS week is-

👉Christina Gibbs NRP, FP-C👈

🚁What made you want to become a paramedic?
- The short version…My sister sustained significant trauma from an accident involving a drunk driver. Of my immediate family, I made it to the ER first, and I felt completely ignorant and helpless. I didn’t want to ever feel that way again, so I knew I wanted to do something in emergency medicine.

🚁How long have you been in EMS?
- 17 years. 10 on the flight line.

🚁What’s your favorite part of the job?
- The office view is pretty great sometimes, but the education is second to none.

🚁What’s the hardest part of working in EMS?
- The older I get, the more I want to capitalize on my time off. Family is aging, kids are growing, and you just realize how much you’ve missed over the years.

🚁What’s one call you’ll never forget?
- Flying back across the Ponchartrain at midnight on New Years. I still have trouble wrapping my head around the insane amount of fireworks. Words will never do it justice. I felt really lucky to get to see that.

🚁What’s the best advice you’ve received in EMS?
- It may not be advice as much as it is just one of the “EMS Laws,” but If the patient tells you they’re dying, they probably are.

🚁What’s something people misunderstand about paramedics?
- The sheer amount of education, and continuing education, it requires to do this is probably far more than you would think. It’s not just a ride to the hospital, it’s a mobile emergency room. I just think Paramedics are generally looked over and their true level of expertise, education, and adaptability is misunderstood and grossly undervalued.

🚁What motivates you on difficult shifts?
- I think it’s just the possibility that, at any given moment, we could be dispatched to a patient where our treatment and rapid transport can truly make a measurable difference.

🚁What’s one skill every great paramedic should have?
- Honestly, the ability to listen. Whether that’s listening to your gut, the patient(s), their family, or simply to listen to what they’re NOT telling you.

🚁What’s your proudest moment in your career?
- Honestly, I think “delivering” babies are up at the top. The patients did most of the work, but It’s pure panic followed by elation. There was a lot of crying. (May or may not have been the newborns🤷🏼‍♀️) Something about being there in that moment to witness a new life just feels surreal.

🚁Energy drinks or coffee?
- You know I don’t walk into work without an energy drink😂

🚁What’s one message you’d share with new EMS providers?
- Never stop learning. You do a disservice to your patients, and to yourself, by not continuing to grow. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! And just know, we ALL get humbled, and while it doesn’t exactly make for the funnest time, it’s both necessary and beneficial. Just take ownership of it, learn the “why,” and then apply it moving forward!

🚁Tell us one fun-fact about yourself or what you think your coworkers would say about you!
- Fun fact…My dad and my twin brother are also Paramedics. I don’t know if we’re competitive, crazy, or trying to start our own Ambulance service 🤷🏼‍♀️

✨🩺As we wrap up Nurses Week, we want to recognize one more nurse at our base — and celebrate the dedication, compassion, and strength that flight nurses bring to every shift. 🚁

🩺One piece of advice for future nurses?

-That people have no modesty around you and they trust you!

🩺What made you choose flight nursing?
-I love a good adrenaline rush!

-It was turbulent, bloody, and long. My partner had two patients because I got nauseated. Whoopsie.

Happy Nurses Week! 💙

This week, we want to take a moment to celebrate some truly incredible nurses by highlighting their stories, experiences, and the heart they bring to this profession every single day with a little Q&A. Nursing is built on compassion, resilience, and a whole lot of grit—and I’m so excited to share the voices behind it all.

Stay tuned, show them some love, and feel free to join in by commenting or sharing your own experiences along the way! 🩺✨

First up is Kelsi Long CFRN, CEN💖

✨What inspired you to become a nurse?
-My great grandmother. She was the biggest part of my life growing up and I wanted to learn how I could take care of her so she would never have to worry about being cared for.

✨What's one moment in your career you'll never forget?
-Getting the call from my boss about being hired! I literally cried! It was the beginning of a career long dream coming true finally!

✨Coffee or energy drinks to survive your shift?
-Redbull all the way

✨What's the funniest thing a patient has ever said to you?
-I love you- immediately after receiving a large dose of ketamine!

✨One piece of advice for future nurses?
-Don’t give up. Dream big. You can do anything you put your mind to, I’m living proof that your dreams really do come true.

✨What's something people don't realize about being a nurse?
-The upkeep in education and certifications you have to retain.

✨What made you choose flight nursing?
-I was working in the ER my first year as a nurse and had an encounter with a flight crew- they were amazing with their level of knowledge and skill set plus they looked pretty awesome walking in through those double doors with their slow walk and angelic glow around them being the saviors we needed at that moment. I was instantly hooked on being at that level of a provider.

✨Do you remember your first flight—what was it like?
-Oh yes!! It was exhilarating and a bundle of nervousness all in one!! It was a simple call and went great and couldn’t wait for the next one!! It was 1 of 4 that 24 hours!!

✨What's the most intense or unforgettable call you've been on?
-The most unforgettable moment I’ve had was a really touching one. In nursing or EMS we don’t get thanked a whole lot but I had a parent grab me and hug me, thanking me after getting their child to the higher level facility. That has stuck with me for 3 years now.

✨What's one skill that's essential for flight nursing that people might not realize?
-You have to be humble! You will not know everything and this is a constant learning field. You have to take criticism and apply it to the next flight and also take the wins where you can.

✨What's something about your job that would surprise most people?
-Our job doesn’t stop just because it’s raining! We assist EMS with ground transfers of critical patients even when we can’t fly. Also that we work 24 hour shifts as opposed to a 12 hour shifts.

✨Favorite in-flight snack or must-have item on shift?
-Favorite in flight snack is definitely a rice krispy treat and a Dr Pepper- it refreshes the soul!!
