We stop letting people in at 4:00 This seven-acre park is the largest of its kind in Louisiana, complete with Cajun Music, lots of hungry alligators and tortoises. From covered, protected walkways and platforms you'll see hundreds of alligators in their natural environment. The whole family will enjoy watching and feeding these big gators. But there's much more to the Alligator Park than just gators. Children also love the Petting Zoo, Reptile House, Jungle, Tortoise Exhibit, Rocky Racoon Resort and much more. You can have your picture taken with many reptiles and shop for the unusual in our Gift Shop. Come enjoy an unforgettable adventure!

Louisiana has alligators in the swamps.

Alligators in the marshes.

Alligators beside the highways.

And apparently, we decided we needed entire attractions devoted to them too.

Gator Country Louisiana, near Natchitoches, is one of those places where visitors can get a much closer look at Louisiana's most famous reptile.

The attraction is associated with the wildlife work of Gary Saurage, whose alligator and reptile operations began in Texas before expanding into Louisiana.

Visitors can encounter alligators of different sizes along with other reptiles and animals.

And while alligators are the stars, the experience is also designed to introduce visitors to the behavior and biology of these animals.

Because here's something interesting.

American alligators were once in serious trouble.

By the middle of the 20th century, uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had severely reduced populations in parts of their range.

Legal protections and regulated conservation programs helped the species recover.

Today, Louisiana has one of the country's largest alligator populations.

That doesn't mean these animals are harmless.

Quite the opposite.

A large alligator is an extremely powerful predator, and close encounters should only happen under trained supervision.

But there's something unforgettable about seeing one of these animals up close.

The armored skin.

The enormous jaws.

The way they can sit completely still before suddenly moving.

It's no wonder the alligator has become such an unmistakable part of Louisiana's identity.

Louisiana has alligator attractions.
