Angie Holan, an alum of the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Class of 1990, recently spoke with students in the Natchitoches Leadership Academy about leadership, career development and personal growth.
Drawing from her background in journalism and information science, Holan encouraged students to stay open to new opportunities and evolving interests. She shared that leadership often develops over time through experience, initiative and a willingness to grow, rather than beginning with formal titles.
Holan emphasized the importance of communication and persuasion in leadership, explaining that effective leaders motivate others toward shared goals instead of simply giving orders. She also highlighted self-motivation as a key factor in success and encouraged students to help align individual goals with team objectives.
She stressed the value of emotional control and professionalism, advising students to remain calm, listen actively and stay open to differing viewpoints, even during difficult conversations. Patience, she noted, is an essential leadership skill developed through experience.
Students were encouraged to seek feedback, ask questions and take initiative if they are interested in leadership roles. Holan also discussed the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability, saying curiosity and continued education have played a major role in her career.
The Natchitoches Leadership Academy engages students in hands-on leadership projects, case studies and real-world problem solving as part of a college-level learning experience.
The session concluded with a question-and-answer discussion on leadership transitions, team management and workplace dynamics.
