(466)

Established by the Louisiana legislature in 1982, LSMSA has become a viable option for high school students who wish to surpass the limitations of their home schools. A public high school, LSMSA has no tuition and only a nominal room and board fee, with assistance available from the LSMSA Foundation for qualifying families. Students are encouraged to apply during their freshman or sophomore year,

but some consideration is given to students who apply only to attend for their senior year. LSMSA belongs to an expanding nationwide group of state-supported, residential high schools founded to serve the academic, artistic, and creative needs of many of the states' best students.

Senior Spotlight: Trevor Holliman

After graduating from LSMSA on May 16, Trevor Holliman plans to attend the LSU Ogden Honors College, where he will major in Biochemistry with a Pre-Health concentration.

One of his favorite LSMSA memories is the finals period when there aren’t actually any finals—the weekend in the middle or the days between finals and graduation. He describes it as a time when the social environment, free from academic stress, is especially enjoyable.

His first impression of LSMSA: “I would be surrounded by weirdos.” Trevor adds that this turned out to be true, but in the best way—“everyone here (including myself) is really weird, but it’s incredibly lovable.”

The best piece of advice he’s received: “Communication is key, but a key is nothing without a lock to interpret it. You must be willing to listen, too.”

His advice for future students is to plan ahead for the entire time at LSMSA. He notes that his own schedule of seven science classes was intentional, designed early in his sophomore year to allow flexibility later for the senior-year courses he wanted most.

Trevor also shared a shout-out to his friends, “they know who they are,” and emphasized that anyone putting in their best effort deserves recognition, especially in a high-achieving academic environment.

Congratulations, Trevor, and best of luck in your next chapter! 🎉

LSMSA students wrapped up the year with a Dog Day event focused on student wellness, stress relief, and taking a well-earned break before finals.

The event was planned by student teams who spent the year developing projects ranging from mental health awareness to mentorship, literacy, and sustainability initiatives. Despite a few challenges along the way, they adapted and still brought meaningful ideas to campus.

Students also partnered with sponsors to support the event and were able to give over $200 back through donations to a local animal shelter and a nonprofit that helps families with pet care needs.

Overall, it was a simple idea that did exactly what it needed to do—bring some smiles, some calm, and a lot of very cute dogs to campus.

🎹✨ A wonderful evening of music at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts!

The school recently celebrated the Senior Piano Recital of Paulina Hsiau, held in CPT Recital Hall as part of the senior performance series.

Paulina’s recital showcased her growth, discipline, and artistry at the piano, featuring a thoughtfully prepared program that highlighted both technical skill and musical expression. Her performance reflected years of dedication to her craft and marked a meaningful milestone in her time at LSMSA.

Family, friends, and the LSMSA community gathered to support and celebrate this special moment as she concluded her senior recital experience.

Congratulations to Paulina on a beautiful performance and a memorable evening of music! 🎶💙

Senior Spotlight: Mia Parrish

After graduating from LSMSA, Mia is headed to William & Mary, where she'll major in history and pursue a pre-law track.

Mia says one of her favorite memories at LSMSA was participating in the AIT Theatre Capstone.

“When I first came to LSMSA, I thought the school was amazing, but I was so scared to live by myself,” she shared.

The best advice Mia has received is: “Time is going to pass anyway, so you might as well do something meaningful with it.”

Her advice for future students: “Don’t stress too much about getting lower grades than you expected. It’s just teaching you how to succeed in college.”

Mia also wanted to give a special shoutout to Dr. Green and Dr. Stephens for creating a class that “portrayed history as a story rather than blindly memorizing dates.”

Congratulations, Mia! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.

Angie Holan, an alum of the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Class of 1990, recently spoke with students in the Natchitoches Leadership Academy about leadership, career development and personal growth.

Drawing from her background in journalism and information science, Holan encouraged students to stay open to new opportunities and evolving interests. She shared that leadership often develops over time through experience, initiative and a willingness to grow, rather than beginning with formal titles.

Holan emphasized the importance of communication and persuasion in leadership, explaining that effective leaders motivate others toward shared goals instead of simply giving orders. She also highlighted self-motivation as a key factor in success and encouraged students to help align individual goals with team objectives.

She stressed the value of emotional control and professionalism, advising students to remain calm, listen actively and stay open to differing viewpoints, even during difficult conversations. Patience, she noted, is an essential leadership skill developed through experience.

Students were encouraged to seek feedback, ask questions and take initiative if they are interested in leadership roles. Holan also discussed the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability, saying curiosity and continued education have played a major role in her career.

The Natchitoches Leadership Academy engages students in hands-on leadership projects, case studies and real-world problem solving as part of a college-level learning experience.

The session concluded with a question-and-answer discussion on leadership transitions, team management and workplace dynamics.

🎓 Senior Spotlight (Class of 2026): Caleb Theriot

Following LSMSA’s graduation ceremony on May 16, where the Class of 2026 walked across the stage to receive their diplomas, we're continuing to highlight graduates and their next steps.

Caleb Theriot is headed to Neumont College of Computer Science, where he will major in Computer Science.

One of his favorite LSMSA memories was a weekend spent watching anime with friends—laughing, joking, and enjoying time together while making fun of characters and sharing the experience.

His first impressions of LSMSA came during New Student Orientation, where he was excited by the environment, meeting other students, and beginning to plan his schedule filled with computer science and math courses.

A piece of advice that stuck with him: “Due tomorrow? Do tomorrow.” — Patrick Perdue

His advice for future students: Make sure your work gets done early when possible, so you’re not rushing and stressing at the last second.

Shoutout to his roommate and close friend Ian Meyers for constant support throughout his time at LSMSA.

Congratulations, Caleb! 🎉
