Talk. Prepare. Share.

One of our many inspiring followers shared their experience of organizing a touching tribute for family members who have died. As we approach , we'd like to share this tribute here, as an idea for how to start having conversations about the kind of care you'd like to have through the . "Members of my extended family gathered in the San Juan Islands to honor and scatter the ashes of my husband, my mother, my sister, and a brother-in-law in the Haro Strait.

We spent the day together, sharing memories, on the water in one of their favorite places. Later that evening we had a big bonfire on the beach — sharing stories, laughter, barbeque, Washington wine, and joy.

I had assembled 'swag bags' for each person. They were filled with photographs, forget-me-not and sweet William seed packs (my husband's name was Bill), small Rosa Queen Elizabeth rose bush starts (my mother's name was Elizabeth), Life Saver candies, CDs compiled from each deceased person's favorite music, Día De Los Mu***os (Day Of The Dead) ballpoint pens, and a blank advance directive!

The swag bag was the impetus to 'have the conversation' — it was amazingly rich and fun! Everyone participated, no one had qualms. As one of the youngest family members said, 'This is the way we should talk about death ... when we're full of life.'"
