(404)

Broadmoor’s nine miles of walking trails guide you through a variety of field, woodland, and wetland habitats. A quarter-mile, universally accessible trail and boardwalk along the bank of Indian Brook and over the marsh offers great opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and sketching. To enjoy this site in the winter, bring your snowshoes or cross-country skis. Stroll along the edge of Indi

an Brook, which flows into the Charles River at the sanctuary, and look for wood ducks and signs of beavers and otters from the 110-foot-long bridge.

Have you ever found comfort or meaning in a bird sighting? 🦉

For Ali, an owl sighting came when she needed it most:

“It was one week before I was scheduled for sudden, unexpected cervical spine surgery. I was anxious and in a lot of pain, but knew a walk at the nearby Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary would cheer me up. I had just entered the woods after the boardwalk, and looked down to see a Barred Owl standing on the trail, looking up at me with wide eyes. I couldn't believe it. We watched each other silently for a bit before it flew to a nearby tree. It stayed close, gliding from tree to tree as I meandered along. Eventually I heard the call of a SECOND Barred Owl. We spent about an hour together as the pair hunted for their dinner. Since owls can turn their heads 270 degrees, I couldn't help but see this experience as a very good omen for my imminent neck surgery.”

Many thanks for sharing your story Ali, and congratulations on winning the April Go Wild for Wildlife Giveaway! Enter May’s giveaway for a chance to win a limited-edition branded tote bag and have your story featured here by sharing your wild story at massaudubon.org/gowildstories.

One of our favorite flowers is popping up from the forest floor 🌷

Pink Lady's Slippers look like something out of a fantasy novel, but they grow right here in our pine forests. Not every plant blooms every year--sometimes they can "rest" underground while saving up their energy to flower the next spring. That makes seeing them all the more special, so keep your eyes peeled!

What new flash of color prompted you to think more deeply about birds?

For Keridan, it was a brilliant red: ♦️ “My kids and I love identifying birds in our neighborhood— cardinals, robins, blue jays— but the variety seemed limited. One day, on a hike through Broadmoor, my daughter saw a flash of brilliant red— a bird we had never seen before! We learned from the [Mass Audubon] staff that it was a Scarlet Tanager, not uncommon but brand new and so beautiful to us. That tanager alerted us to the richness and diversity of our local birds. Ever since, we’ve kept our eyes and ears open in wooded and urban settings alike for both familiar songs and brand-new sights.” ♦️

Scarlet Tanagers have just arrived in Massachusetts, where they will spend breeding season. Keep an eye out for a streak of red high up in the trees!

Thanks for sharing your wild story, Keridan! If you have your own wild story, submit them to our Wild for Wildlife Giveaway here: https://www.massaudubon.org/nature-wildlife/go-wild-for-wildlife/wild-stories-giveaway-entry-form
