Convening, collaboration, and coordination are at the heart of United Way’s work. Supporting strong systems and services that work alongside one another is vital to creating meaningful and lasting impact.

Today’s meeting with local providers from our homeless response system and UConn Health Waterbury Hospital was another great example of that collective impact in action.

Our discussion focused on better understanding the strengths, resources, and limitations of both the healthcare and homeless response systems, while identifying opportunities to strengthen coordination and remove barriers for the people we collectively serve.

Just as importantly, today provided an opportunity for frontline providers to connect in person, put faces to names, strengthen relationships, and, for many, meet one another for the first time.
At United Way of Greater Waterbury, we believe bringing people together matters.

By breaking down silos, strengthening partnerships, and improving coordination across systems, we can help ensure providers have the resources and relationships they need to better serve our community and help everyone thrive.

Gavin provides vital, life-saving street outreach services to individuals in the surrounding towns outside of Waterbury. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible partners at Wheeler Health of Waterbury. They continue to be an absolute asset to our community! Recently, their team stepped up with a generous donation of gift cards and essential supplies to directly support our neighbors in need. Thank you for your donation and everything you do to help us care for our unsheltered neighbors. We are so grateful for your partnership!

During earlier in August, our amazing team in did an internal drive for socks, food gift cards, and hygiene products. This week, we were thrilled to donate these items and more to our partners Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach. Thank you for the incredible work you do!

We are incredibly humbled and honored to accept the Unsung Hero Award.

At Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach, our team does a lot of work that never makes it to the spotlight. We spend countless hours behind the scenes, in the streets, parking garages, abandoned buildings, wooded areas, and other difficult and sometimes dangerous places to make sure our community’s most vulnerable people are not forgotten.

Our work is about much more than connecting someone to housing. It’s about showing up when someone is having the worst day of their life. It’s helping someone get medical care, replacing a lost ID, finding a safe place to sleep, connecting someone with benefits, sitting with someone in crisis, or simply reminding them that they matter. Our outreach team works long hours, often in challenging conditions, because we believe everyone deserves to be safe, treated with dignity, and given a chance to rebuild their life.

This award belongs to our entire team, but also to every person we have had the privilege of walking alongside.

Thank you sincerely to everyone who believes in this mission. Stay tuned as we continue to grow and better assist those who face housing instability.

Joshua Royer and the team at Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach will receive the 2026 Unsung Hero Award from the Waterbury Regional Chamber’s Health Care Council during its 21st Annual Meeting & Awards Breakfast on Tuesday, September 22, at Aria in Prospect.

Led by Royer, a licensed clinical social worker and the organization’s executive director, the team brings support directly to people experiencing homelessness throughout Greater Waterbury. They regularly visit encampments, abandoned buildings and other locations to provide case management, counseling, food, clothing, hygiene products and essential supplies while connecting individuals with resources that can lead to safe, affordable housing.

Their compassionate, hands-on work often takes place out of public view and under difficult conditions. By meeting people where they are with dignity, respect and persistence, Joshua and his team provide not only critical assistance, but hope.

Join us as we recognize their extraordinary commitment, along with this year’s other award recipients. Dr. Manisha Juthani, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, will deliver the keynote address.

We are so grateful to partner with Yale In-Motion, an essential partner in supporting our unsheltered friends. They help ensure that health care is accessible, responsive, and available in the moment it’s needed most.

The mobile unit is a fully functioning retail pharmacy and clinic bringing healthcare to people wherever they live (housed or unhoused). Community Health Workers (CHW) can perform:

Blood Pressure screening,
Glucose (blood sugar) screening,
Rapid HIV/Hepatitis C testing,
Opioid, stimulant, and alcohol use disorder screening,
Needs assessment (food, housing, employment, insurance, etc.) and provide active referrals to social services in the community.

CHWs work with clinicians and in-person pharmacists to provide medication. Primary health concerns will also be addressed in clinical encounters. Schedule a visit or to be contacted by our team, fill out your information beneath the calendar.

We are proud to invest in the work of Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach as part of our multi-tiered homeless response and prevention strategies.

Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach provides case management and counseling services to people living outside or those recently housed.

Visits are made to campsites, factories, and abandoned buildings several times a week and even in the bitter cold and snowy days of the winter months.

They provide food, warm clothing, hygiene products, camping equipment, and most importantly, HOPE.

⭐️ What a fantastic evening celebrating National Night Out with our communities in Waterbury and Naugatuck! ⭐️

The Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach team had the opportunity to connect with residents, local organizations, first responders, and community partners while sharing information about the work we do every day to support individuals experiencing homelessness.
