We are incredibly grateful to welcome Michael as a BSW intern for the 2026-2027 academic school year.

Michael is a Bachelor of Social Work student in his final year at Western Connecticut State University who chose Social Work because of his desire to make a positive change in society. He is passionate about building meaningful relationships and creating spaces where individuals feel heard, valued, and respected. Through his internship, he hopes to continue developing his skills while supporting individuals and strengthening his ability to serve his community with compassion and understanding. Michael hopes to have a continuous involvement in outreach throughout his Social Work career.

We are so excited to welcome Amanda to our team as a BSW intern for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Amanda is an undergraduate social work student at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), pursuing her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). Her passion for social work comes from a lifelong desire to help others, whether they are friends, family, or strangers. She began her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and later transitioned into working as an Independent Living Skills Trainer (ILST), supporting individuals in their daily lives and independence.

Amanda has a strong interest in mental health, human behavior, and understanding how the brain influences our lives. Growing up in Waterbury, Connecticut, she has seen her community change over the years and hopes to use her experiences to give back and support others. Through her internship, she looks forward to learning more about the community, building meaningful connections, and gaining experience that will help her work toward her long-term goal of opening her own practice.

We were deeply humbled to accept the Unsung Hero Award this morning at the Annual Health Care Council Award Breakfast, hosted by the Waterbury Regional Chamber.

As our Executive Director shared in his speech:
“Sometimes we can’t fix everything in one conversation. Sometimes all we can do is bring a meal, help someone get an ID, sit beside them, listen, or tell them, ‘I’m coming back tomorrow.’”

We truly believe in the power of showing up.
Street outreach is not always about having an immediate solution. Sometimes it’s about consistency, compassion, and letting someone know they haven’t been forgotten.

As long as people are willing to show up, there will always be HOPE.

We are incredibly grateful to the Waterbury Regional Chamber and the Health Care Council for recognizing the work of Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach. Most importantly, we share this award with our incredible team, our community partners, volunteers, supporters, and every person who continues to trust us enough to open the door and let us walk alongside them.

We are incredibly grateful to United Way of Greater Waterbury and everyone who attended the Campaign Breakfast and generously donated deodorant.

Deodorant is an item we often overlook and take for granted, but for someone experiencing homelessness, it can mean so much more. It provides comfort, confidence, and, most importantly, a sense of dignity. Thank you for helping us provide these everyday essentials to those in our community who need them most. Your generosity truly makes a difference.

💜 Brian Gibbons Homeless Outreach was honored to participate in the Overdose Awareness Event at Waterbury City Hall hosted by UConn Waterbury Hospital and The City of Waterbury.

It was a great opportunity to connect with other organizations, learn more about programs and resources available in our community, and strengthen the partnerships that help us better support the people we serve.

Most importantly, it was a reminder that there is always HOPE. 💜

Convening, collaboration, and coordination are at the heart of United Way’s work. Supporting strong systems and services that work alongside one another is vital to creating meaningful and lasting impact.

Today’s meeting with local providers from our homeless response system and UConn Health Waterbury Hospital was another great example of that collective impact in action.

Our discussion focused on better understanding the strengths, resources, and limitations of both the healthcare and homeless response systems, while identifying opportunities to strengthen coordination and remove barriers for the people we collectively serve.

Just as importantly, today provided an opportunity for frontline providers to connect in person, put faces to names, strengthen relationships, and, for many, meet one another for the first time.
At United Way of Greater Waterbury, we believe bringing people together matters.

By breaking down silos, strengthening partnerships, and improving coordination across systems, we can help ensure providers have the resources and relationships they need to better serve our community and help everyone thrive.
