We had a dumpster at the fire station this weekend for a clean out of the attic. Today members of the C Shift used it for an improvised training scenario to lift a heavy object off a person. Tools used included a floor jack, hydraulic spreader with a TL 9, rescue jacks, and air bags as well as cribbing.

It is more than just lifting. Discussion with firefighters on assessing weight and material in the dumpster, selecting a proper lift point, stabilizing the load and EMS considerations including crush syndrome.

Training keeps skills fresh, especially for incidents that do not occur often.

On Saturday evening at 11:59, Naugatuck Fire Department received a call for a fire in a home on Celentano Drive. A fire occurred in a utility room in the basement of a raised ranch. The fire was quickly extinguished. No injuries and no structural damage to the house. The occupants will be displaced until repairs are completed.

While the fire was small, the bigger story is the working smoke detectors that notified the occupants, the homeowner using a fire extinguisher to slow the fire briefly while two adults and two children escaped unharmed and making the 911 call that brought the NFD to the scene.

Fires grow fast and produce toxic smoke-they are nothing like what you see on TV shows or movies. Working smoke detectors save lives and help in reducing property loss. Check your smoke detectors, replace them if they are over 10 years old and never hesitate to call 911 if you smell smoke or the detectors go off.

The photo is the melted smoke detector that warned the family.

Tonight UConn Health Waterbury Hospital recognized several emergency medical providers for services and incidents over the past year. Naugatuck FD received a unit citation for a multi-patient carbon monoxide incident that occurred on November 1st.

Other agencies recognized for the same incident: Naugatuck EMS, Naugatuck PD, Beacon Hose Co. 1, Hatzalah Ambulance, Bethany EMS, Trinity EMS, and Valley Emergency Medical Services. All five victims recovered.

We are fortunate to have emergency services from neighboring towns, both full time and volunteer, who are available and willing to help out other communities when called.
