August was a busy month for the NFD. Responded to 159 incidents, four fires displaced 12 families involving 47 residents.

08/29/2026

Today at 1:25 PM the NFD responded to a structure fire in a multi family building at 58 High Street. Engine 2 from the Maple St station arrived first and reported smoke showing from front on building at the second floor.

Crews made entry and found everyone to be out of the building. Naugatuck EMS treated and transported one victim. Fire was contained to second floor apartment, but there is water and smoke damage throughout. Red Cross was on scene assisting 12 displaced occupants. Assistance received from Prospect and Middlebury fire departments.

The Fire Marshal is conducting a Fire cause investigation.

At 2:25 this morning, Naugatuck Fire Dispatch received a call of a fire in a condo on Ridge Road. Naugatuck PD first on scene and reported fire from the 2nd floor windows of the building, which has six condo units.

Naugatuck FD attacked the fire and quickly brought it under control. Two units suffered fire and water damage with smoke throughout all units. NFD assisted on scene by Middlebury and Prospect fire departments. Beacon Hose provided station coverage.

One minor burn injury reported to an occupant. Red Cross assisting displaced residents. The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.

Naugatuck Fire Department jumper Vigilant decked out for a parade. A team of men would pull the cart to a fire hydrant, lay out the hose, connect a nozzle and fight the fire. This, and other carts, were used until the first motorized fire truck was purchased in 1914.

The individual second from the right next to the rear wheel is Fire Chief Jerome Fuller. He was the second Fire Chief in Naugatuck and held that position from 1893 to 1903.

The kerosene lanterns in the photos are from Vigilant, visible to the left of the boy in the white shirt and are on display at Naugatuck Fire Headquarters.

The Naugatuck Fire Department traces its origin to an industrial fire brigade formed in 1883 for the Goodyear India Rubber Glove Company. Fire brigades at the rubber shops protected the factories and several downtown buildings.

This undated photo is of the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Company F. & P. A. (Fire and Protection Association). Hose House is where the fire hose was stored, similar to a fire station.

Control of the factory fire brigades was turned over to the town in 1890, creating the Naugatuck Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, forerunner of the Naugatuck Fire Department.

The wheeled cart on the left is a hand pulled hose cart called a jumper. Firefighters would connect to a fire hydrant, lay out up to a couple hundred feet of hose, attach a nozzle, open the fire hydrant and attack the fire.

The cart on the right is a chemical extinguisher. Sulfuric acid would be mixed with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda); the chemical reaction would produce a foam containing carbon dioxide that was forced through the hose by the chemical reaction to extinguish the fire. This type of extinguisher was extremely hazardous due to the acid and uncontrollable pressure created.

The first ladder truck for the Naugatuck Fire Department was this horse drawn wagon. The horses were owned by a livery company on Cherry Street. They would be brought to the fire station when the fire whistles went off, hitched to the wagon and then respond to the call This was the only horse drawn fire apparatus operated by the NFD.

Date of this picture is between 1909 when the station was built and 1915 when the wagon was replaced by a motorized apparatus.

The Naugatuck Fire Department recently received a grant from the CT Water Company to replace a fire hydrant valve. This valve allows us to add a pump to hose connected to a fire hydrant without interrupting the flow of water.

This is used when water must be pumped through several hundred feet of hose, or when pumping water uphill.

The new valve replaces a 30+ year old valve that failed. A feature of the new valve it that is opens and closes slowly to prevent damage to the water pipes, unlike the old valve which was a quarter turn to operate.

Road damage at Rubber Avenue and Aetna Street. The Rubber Avenue between Arch Street and Andrew Avenue. is closed as is one-way section of Aetna Street. Public Works working to open one lane on Rubber Avenue. Road is undermined due to a problem with the storm sewer.

Naugatuck Fire Department responded to 164 incidents during July. Mutual aid provided to both Waterbury (station coverage) and Prospect (assist at a house fire). Off duty firefighters called back to the fire station 25 times.

A look back at Naugatuck Fire Department's history. This is a 1947 American LaFrance ladder truck, in service in Naugatuck until 1992. It had a 75' aerial ladder and wooden ground ladders.

Fire trucks without roofs were common until the 1950's. This truck replaced a 1915 American LaFrance\Brockway ladder truck that is now owned by the The Volunteer Fire Department of Prospect, Inc.. and is used in parades.
