Under the State of Connecticut statutes, Fire Police are a volunteer part of the local Fire Department. Many fire departments in Connecticut have volunteer Fire Police organizations. WHAT DO FIRE POLICE DO? Working under the fire department incident commander, the Fire Police are resp
onsible for traffic control and access to fire scenes or other such emergency situations where the Fire Department is in charge of the emergency. In Naugatuck, we are called upon for assistance in times of disaster, and assist the Police Department whenever called upon through the fire department. We have a proud tradition of assisting with traffic control for public events such as parades, fireworks, and any other civic event where extra traffic control is needed. We also represent our town each year, assisting with traffic at the State Firefighters Convention Parade. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A FIRE POLICE? To be a member of the Fire Police, you must be 18 years of age, hold a current driver’s license, pass a background check, and be accepted by an interview panel. WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING WILL I RECEIVE? All training is provided free of charge. An eight hour training program in Basic Fire Police procedures and traffic control from an instructor authorized by the Connecticut Fire Academy is required before a person is allowed to work alone. Prior to training, probationary officers are allowed to work with a trained officer. FEMA incident command training ICS 100, 200 and 700, which are free and taken over the internet, are required in order to complete probation. Other training includes Traffic Incident Management, introduction to HAZMAT, Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness, and other topics per the Fire Chief. WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED? Special uniforms and equipment required in the performance of duty are supplied. Fire Police Officers are dispatched via text messages. Emergency turn out gear includes a white hard hat, a uniform cap, a reflective vest, a special traffic flashlight, a reflective rain coat, and rain pants. Once probation is completed, a shield is issued. Members are expected to wear other personal clothing as appropriated for weather condition. For scheduled events, Fire Police are issued a navy blue BDU style uniform with fire police insignias, an embroidered shield, and the uniform cap. A state blue light permit will be issued to members who install optional flashing blue lights (not provided) on their personal vehicles for use when vehicle is stationary and controlling traffic.
