Throughout the 2025-2026 school year, we’ve been showing how we live out our mission of Learn. Thrive. Belong. through the amazing events, achievements, and daily happenings in all of our Naugatuck Public Schools. However, we cannot fully encompass this vision without highlighting the diverse cultures that we are so lucky to have in our district.

We visited all of our elementary schools and our Early Childhood Center to have our multilingual students tell us how they say “At Naugatuck Public Schools, we learn, thrive and belong” in their native languages. Our littlest learners at ECC have been learning sign language and were very excited to teach us how to say Learn. Thrive. Belong!

As we begin the final stretch of our school year, we express our gratitude for all of our learners, teachers, families, and support staff from every background, culture and language, who help every student, in every classroom, at every school, every day Learn. Thrive. Belong. no matter what!

It’s graduation and celebration season at NPS, and we kicked it off strong with one of our favorite events of the year, Naugatuck Adult Education Graduation! We are so proud of all of the students who received certificates and degrees from English language courses, Family Literacy classes, and high school degree completion programs. The graduates were joined by an auditorium full of family, friends, teachers, and town dignitaries such as Superintendent Melissa Cooney, Mayor Pete Hess, and Board of Education Chairman Bob Mezzo.

Congratulations to all those who were celebrated at the ceremony. The sacrifices, effort, perseverance, and dedication you all have put into furthering your learning and conquering challenges is truly an inspiration to us all!

Today's Staff Shout Out recognizes one of our incredible paraeducators at Hop Brook Elementary School, Ms. Polly Grant!

"Almost every day when my child comes home from school, she is always talking so highly about Ms. Grant. My daughter feels safe with her, and for a parent to keep hearing all the helpful thing she does for my child when I can’t at that time means so much! We are very appreciative for her!"

"Ms. Grant is very sweet! I hear a lot about her, if not every day it’s every other day, on how she helps my daughter in her classroom or even a hug when she gets off the bus. She says that she loves reading to her and gets excited when she sees Ms. Grant."

"She’s such a helpful para, my child gets so excited to see her in the morning and throughout the day in her classroom."

Thank you, Ms. Grant, for being such an amazing paraeducator and a wonderful resource for the students at Hop Brook! We are so incredibly lucky to have you at NPS!

Greyhound Nation and our Naugatuck High School Air Force JROTC were honored this morning at the CAS-CIAC Headquarters as one of the 17 schools across the state who were chosen as the winners of the Challenge to Educational Citizenship Award!

This award celebrates schools that run programs and events that embody the spirit of citizenship and altruistic commitment to serving others, and were evaluated based on the depth and quality of impact that the program had on others in the school community. Greyhound Nation and AFJROTC were chosen for their work in putting on Layla's Light Walk-A-Thon earlier in the school year, where they raised $6,600 for the scholarship fund created in honor of Layla Nemeth, a former NHS student. Layla's mom, Dawn, joined our students and staff this morning at the award ceremony. Check out the video of our student representatives giving their acceptance speech!

Thank you, CAS-CIAC for recognizing the incredible work our students put in to make Layla's Light Walk-a-Thon a reality and a success. We are so proud of our students for going the extra mile and creating this event in honor of Layla to continue spreading the joy and light that she exuded every day during her time at NHS and beyond. Way to go, Greyhound Nation and AFJROTC - an award well earned!

At NPS, we ensure that our students know that Memorial Day is more than a day off, a long weekend, or just a day for a parade. At both Naugatuck High School and Hillside Intermediate School, ceremonies were held on Friday to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of our country.

At NHS, our Air Force JROTC read the names of all of the Naugatuck citizens who have died in war, and students heard a moving testimony from Spanish teacher Mr. Troy, who is a proud and decorated member of the Connecticut Army National Guard.

Hillside brought together their school as well as community leaders such as Mayor Pete Hess, Superintendent Melissa Cooney, and State Representative Seth Bronko to speak to students on the importance of honoring the memory and sacrifice of those men and women who gave everything. They also took time to celebrate the veterans in their lives and the sacrifices they have made during their time as service members, many who were in attendance as special guests.

Both ceremonies concluded with the laying of a memorial wreath and the playing of Taps, as well as performances by the NHS Chamber Singers, and Hillside Choir and Band. Thank you to all who contributed, attended, performed, and allowed us to take time and remember why we have the freedoms we do every day.
