Another lightening strike last night (3rd strike that caused a fire in our district in the last month). Thank you Nederland resident for reporting the fire, US Forest Service for getting there first, BCSO deputy for confirming the fire, and NFPD firefighters for fast arrival and extinguishment! It takes a village.

Sometimes our work at the station (and catching up on personal lives) delay postings. I wanted to post this last week, so my apologies for the lateness!

On Saturday, July 25 during a rainstorm, a lightning strike hit a tree and started a wildland fire in the Big Springs neighborhood. We are so grateful someone saw the tree strike, and called it in right away. NFPD firefighters responded and put it out before it could run away.

Thank you all for your vigilance reporting fires, even when it seems too wet outside for a fire to start. Our "1000 hour fuels" (also known as trees) are really dry this year, so fires can start even in a rainstorm when things appear too wet for a fire.

When the Cold Springs Fire started 10 years ago, the firefighters at Nederland Fire Protection District began evacuating some neighborhoods in Nederland to protect the residents. I received a knock on my door to evacuate, and met Eric Abramson, a volunteer with NFPD, for the first time. Little did I know I would get to serve with Eric at NFPD for the next 9 years.

After 30 years of service to our community, Eric has decided to retire from NFPD. It has been a privilege to learn and grow and work with Eric over those years. We have learned a lot from Eric’s experience in the field. We wish him the best in this next phase of his career!

You will not be forgotten Eric! Please don’t be a stranger 😊

On this, the tenth anniversary of the Cold Springs Fire, we want to share some thoughts, and our gratitude.

Your feed has been inundated, we’re sure, with wildland fire photos from around the state of Colorado, and the challenges and suffering associated with them. So, we’re sharing this photo of fire cleanup efforts by volunteers after the Cold Springs Fire (Photo credit: Dawg Nation Hockey Foundation) to remind you that people are resilient, hope prevails, and we all get by with a little help from our friends.

Your efforts or prevent wildfires matter. Your kindness, generosity, and support in their aftermath matter. Thank you for everything you are doing to support our fire fighters.

Here’s why: the sheer amount of work involved in fighting wildland fires is mind boggling - the amount of work involved and support needed during clean up and restoration is immeasurable.

For the Cold Springs Fire, which began on July 9th, 2016, and consumed an estimated 528 acres, destroying 8 residences and numerous outbuildings, and causing the loss of one life (canine), Boulder Disaster Management gave the following resource tally, just through the first five days of operations:

196 Law enforcement personnel, responsible for evacuations of people and livestock, medical responses, fire perimeter control, and road blocks
173 Fire overhead personnel
12 Type I and Type II crews
112 pieces of firefighting apparatus, including engines, water tenders, and dozers
86 Aviation missions - 89.7 hours of fixed wing and 63 hours of rotor wing aircraft, dropping 127,809 gallons of fire retardant and 209,873 gallons of water
544 firefighters, including Hotshot crews, personnel from as far away as Montana and Washington, and member of our department who themselves suffered losses in this fire

[For comparison, the Aspen Acres Fire is currently at an estimate 96,121 acres]

Please, be careful, stay up to date with and follow current fire restrictions, and have an evacuation plan in place.
Again, thank you.
