Day 1 of Junior Police Academy is officially in the books!

We kicked off the morning with a welcome from Chief Schlittler, who informed the cadets that they would be writing a two-page essay for homework each night. Thankfully for both the cadets and their parents, he was just kidding.

The day was packed with activities. Cadets learned the basics of drill and ceremony, while Officer Wise demonstrated our less-lethal capabilities and discussed the importance of de-escalation. Students also got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Public Safety Building.

Our friends (thank you Officer Stiles and Detective Lindland) from Babson College Police Department stopped by with their drone and UTV, and Officer Broderick assisted with a presentation from our own Drone Team, giving cadets a look at how technology is used in modern policing.

The afternoon featured a crime scene presentation from Detectives Schlittler and Poirier, followed by a hands-on crime scene processing exercise where cadets put their investigative skills to the test.

And of course, no day at the Junior Police Academy would be complete without some physical training. We wrapped things up with a nice, light jog to the Town Common. We have a feeling the cadets may describe that portion of the day a little differently.

One day down, three more to go!

’Twas the night before Junior Police Academy, and all through Needham, parents were smiling, some even quietly weeping tears of joy.

Backpacks were packed. Sneakers were lined up by the door.
Alarm clocks were set for an hour most children are convinced shouldn’t exist.

Tomorrow marks Day 1 of the Junior Police Academy, where cadets will learn an important life lesson almost immediately:

7:59 AM means 7:59 AM. Not 8:00. Not 8:01.

Definitely not “my mom got stuck in traffic.”

Over the next week, our cadets will tour Boston Harbor aboard the Massachusetts State Police boats, watch MedFlight land, participate in police simulations, meet comfort dogs, learn from specialized units, and experience countless opportunities that most people never get to see.

Meanwhile, parents will enjoy a rare and magical week where they don’t have to cut off the crust for their child’s PB&J or answer “are we there yet” 75 times.

Or, “what are we doing today?”

To our cadets: get some sleep, bring your enthusiasm, and get ready for an unforgettable week.

To our parents: enjoy your temporary vacation.

We’ll see everyone at 7:59 AM sharp.

School is officially OUT for the summer in about 90 minutes!

Kids are rejoicing. Parents, not so much.
We hear you. 73 days to go…

If you’re looking for Rocket over the summer, he’ll be questioning retirement up at Rosemary Recreation Pool.

Sunglasses on, living his best life with a PLASTIC container of salsa and some chips. Very mindful, very demure.

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy the summer, Needham ☀️

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and father figures out there from your friends at the Needham Police Department!

Today is your day, but let’s be honest, “Happy Wife, Happy Life” still applies. So yes, you’re in charge…
…as long as it’s been approved.

And in true dad fashion, here’s a Dad joke for the road:
- Why did the dad bring a ladder to the bar?
- Because he heard the drinks were on the house.

Stay safe, enjoy the rest of the day, and don’t forget, those white New Balance sneakers aren’t just shoes, they’re a lifestyle.

Thanks Casper for the awesome card and snacks for Father’s Day!!

Well Scotland.

You’ve truly left your mark these last couple of weeks, even here in Needham!

At this point, we’re just waiting for kilts to make a comeback around town too.

Enjoy your Sunday, Needham!

At the end of May, the Needham Police Department received a report from a local business regarding an ongoing larceny investigation from their Needham facility.

Employees discovered a Facebook Marketplace profile listing prototype products for sale. These items were still in the testing and development phase and had not yet been released to the public.

Detective Timmerman worked closely with the company’s security team and was able to identify the individuals involved.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had been stealing prototype and other products from the facility and reselling them online.

With assistance from the Boston Police Department, Needham Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in Dorchester. During the search, detectives recovered more than $31,000 worth of stolen products.

As a result of the investigation:

A 49-year-old Waltham man is being charged with Larceny over $1,200

A 31-year-old Boston woman is being charged with Receiving Stolen Property over $1,200

Great work by Detective Timmerman and all involved agencies in bringing this case to a successful resolution.

Today, dogs and their handlers from across the Commonwealth came together in the Town of Middleborough for one final tribute to Rebel.

Rebel was truly a pioneer.

Over the last eight years, she played an instrumental role in building and shaping community resource dog programs throughout Massachusetts. Because of her work, departments like ours were able to create something special with Rocket, something that continues to make a meaningful impact in our town every single day.

We are forever grateful for the foundation she and SRO Hart laid.

Rebel was honored with a dignified es**rt through her hometown of Walpole, led by the Walpole Police Department and the METRO-LEC motorcycle unit. The procession was a powerful tribute to a dog who meant so much to so many.

Along the route, there was an incredible show of support from residents and local businesses. People lined the streets, pausing from their day to pay their respects and say goodbye. It was a moving reminder of the impact Rebel had on her community, and the lives she touched along the way.

5 officers were selected to take part in moving her casket from Tufts in Walpole to Middleboro. They were Sergeant Dan Morris (Wrentham, K9 Cruiser), Sergeant Joe Choiniere (Norfolk, K9 Mitch), Officer Kevin Carrigan (Babson, K9 Hero), SRO Joe Brienze (Needham, K9 Rocket), and Officer Justin Lau (Newton, K9 Leo).

For them to be chosen to stand alongside her as a final tribute to Rebel’s life was incredibly meaningful.

Today was a reminder that while these dogs serve our communities in countless ways, they also leave a lasting mark on the people behind the badge.

Rest easy, Rebel. Your legacy will live on through every program you helped inspire.

We miss you.

Members of the Needham Police and Fire Departments received one of the most heartfelt cards we could’ve ever imagined coming into work today.

We are incredibly grateful, not just for the kind words, but for the strength and resilience behind them.

We are so happy to share that the juvenile involved in the crash is home, recovering, and surrounded by her friends and family. That is the news we all hope for.

Calls like these remind us why we do what we do. Thank you for the kind words and for thinking of us.

We had a special (and very adorable) visitor stroll into our day!

This friendly pup was found walking along Central Avenue near the Sunita Williams School, and let’s just say, they’ve already made themselves right at home.

Officer Palmer is making sure this good pup is safe, comfortable, and getting plenty of attention.

If this is your dog (or you recognize them), please contact the Needham Police Department
