A 64-quart bin filled to the top with school supplies, along with three new backpacks and everything three awesome kids need to start the school year off right.

When we learned that a family we’ve gotten to know over the years could use a little extra support heading into the new school year, we were happy to help.

A huge thank you to the Needham Police Union, which graciously covered the entire cost of the backpacks, lunchboxes, water bottles, and school supplies.

You won’t see the backpacks in the photo. The kids picked out designs that are pretty specific to their personalities and interests, and protecting their privacy is far more important than getting the perfect picture.

Our hope is that these three kids walk through those school doors feeling confident, prepared, and excited for what’s ahead. Get ready to learn, make friends, create memories, and have a great year!

With just a couple days to go, Dr. G is absolutely reveling in the fact that class is almost back in session.

He’s sharpened his teaching stick and is ready to restore order, particularly when it comes to Mr. Garlick, who is clearly not paying attention and has instead decided to perfect his paper-airplane technique.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bayse is diligently taking notes, smiling, and quietly confident that he will be the far superior (and best-dressed) student in the class.

Rocket slept in so he has some make up work to do to start the week!

Dr. G certainly has his work cut out for him this year.

All jokes aside, school starts this week. Please slow down and give yourself a few extra minutes during your morning commute. Kids will be waiting at bus stops, crossing streets, riding bikes, and walking to school.

Slow down. Stay alert. Expect kids everywhere.

Yesterday afternoon, the Needham Police and Fire Departments responded to a motor vehicle crash involving an e-bike that resulted in injuries and a transport to the hospital.

We will not be releasing additional information regarding the incident, but we want to use this opportunity to remind parents and young riders about the very real risks associated with e-bikes.

E-bikes are becoming increasingly popular with our younger residents. They are heavier, faster, and can accelerate much more quickly than a traditional bicycle. At those speeds, mistakes can have serious consequences.

Parents, PLEASE talk with your children about these important safety reminders:

• Stay off sidewalks. E-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks and riders must follow the rules of the road.

• Wear a helmet. Massachusetts law requires helmets for riders and passengers 16 and younger. We strongly encourage helmets for everyone.

• Watch driveways and parking lots. Slow down anywhere vehicles may be pulling in or out. Drivers may have limited visibility and may not anticipate how quickly an e-bike is approaching at 15 or 20 mph. Never assume a driver sees you.

• Be visible. Use proper lighting and wear bright or reflective clothing.

• Follow traffic laws. Stop at red lights and stop signs, ride with traffic, yield when required, and ride predictably.

• Put the phone away. Keep your attention on the road and your surroundings.

• Know what your child is riding. Understand the speed and capabilities of their e-bike before they ride.

With school beginning next week, we’re asking drivers and riders alike to slow down, pay attention, and look out for one another.

Drivers: take an extra look before pulling out of a driveway, parking lot, or making a turn.

Riders: being able to see a vehicle does not mean the driver can see you.

Tragedies involving e-bikes are happening across the Commonwealth, and we want to do everything we can to prevent one here in Needham.

Tonight at 6:30 p.m., we invite our community to join us at the Memorial Park Gazebo for Needham’s 5th Annual Overdose Awareness Vigil.

Needham is fortunate to be a safe, supportive and affluent community, but substance use disorder and overdose does not recognize town lines, income levels, professions, or family backgrounds. They impact every community, including ours.

As police officers, we have seen these tragedies firsthand. We have responded to overdoses, administered lifesaving Naloxone, supported families during some of their most difficult moments, and witnessed the lasting impact the loss of a loved one can have.

Tonight’s vigil is a relatively short event from 6:30–7:15 p.m, but an incredibly meaningful one. It is an opportunity to remember those we have lost, stand beside the families and friends who continue to grieve, support those in recovery, and remind anyone struggling that there is hope and help available.

We are proud to stand alongside the Needham Public Health Division, Needham Youth & Family Services, SPAN, Needham Fire Department, Learn to Cope, Clear Steps Recovery, and the many other community organizations and partners who make this evening possible.

Free Naloxone and Naloxone training will also be available, along with speakers, music and community resource tables.

Happy National Dog Day from Rocket & Ghost!

With everything going on in the world, we figured everyone’s newsfeed could use a few more dogs today.

After a long day of work, there’s nothing quite like coming home to a wagging tail. Dogs have an incredible way of reducing stress, lifting our spirits, getting us moving, and reminding us to enjoy the simple things.

For those who missed it, a post came across our feed on Saturday morning with someone looking for a little financial assistance getting a backpack for their newest kindergartner

We were happy to help make it happen.

The officer who stepped up asked to remain anonymous, because this was simply about helping a family in our community.

Thank you Needham for continuing to look out for one another.

Two Letters of Commendation

The purpose of this letter is to recognize actions while on duty on August 20, 2026. At approximately 1945 hours, Officers Connor and Soll responded to a residential address for a report of an individual who was choking.

Upon arrival, Officer Connor entered a chaotic and rapidly evolving scene. Despite the circumstances, Officer Connor remained calm, quickly assessed the situation, and immediately began providing the necessary medical assistance.

Officer Connor and Officer Soll were able to bring the individual to his feet, where Officer Connor administered abdominal thrusts and successfully dislodged the food obstructing his airway. Officer Connor's quick actions, sound judgment, and teamwork were instrumental in saving this individual’s life.

Chief Schlittler would like to take this opportunity to recognize Officer Connor and Officer Soll for their professionalism, attention to duty, and teamwork, all of which exemplify the very best of our profession.

In recognition of your actions, Chief Schlittler is pleased to present both with a Letter of Commendation. Your actions brought great credit upon yourself and the Needham Police Department.

With exactly one week to go before the start of school, the Needham Police Department will be out making sure the roadways in and around our schools are safe for students, families, staff, and motorists.

Our officers have already been busy. From January through the end of July 2026, Needham Police conducted more than 3,240 motor vehicle stops. During that same period in 2025, we conducted approximately 2,200. This is an increase of over 1,000 stops in just seven months.

As we head into the new school year, please slow down, put the phone away, and pay extra attention to:

🚲 Children riding bicycles
🚸 Students using crosswalks
🚌 School buses stopping and starting
🚶 Increased pedestrian traffic around our schools
⚠️ Our newer intersections, including Hillside Ave at West Street, Hunnewell Street at Hillside Ave, and Nehoiden Street at Meadowbrook Road

Our officers will continue to be out, especially around our schools and areas where we receive traffic complaints.

As another school year approaches, we know many families are feeling the impact of rising costs. Between school supplies, backpacks, clothing, and everything else that comes with preparing for a new school year, it can quickly become overwhelming.

If you or someone you know could use a little extra help this year before school, please don’t hesitate to send us a private message. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help.

Through programs like our Shop with a First Responder event and the relationships we’ve built throughout the community, we know that MANY families quietly put on a brave face while struggling to make ends meet. Yes, even in Needham. Our officers see far more than what is posted on social media. Financial hardship doesn’t always look the way people expect, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Our School Resource Officers and Community Outreach Team will work directly and confidentially with families to help provide school supplies and connect them with available resources so every student has the opportunity to start the school year feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

We’re also aware that Be Kind Needham and Needham Housing have shared similar messages, and we saw the post this morning on the Needham Parents page. We’re grateful to see so many people and organizations working toward the same goal. We also recognize that we’re fortunate to have a strong social media following and every once in a while, the algorithm works in our favor and allows a message like this to reach well beyond our usual audience. So, if sharing this post helps it reach even one family in Needham who may not have seen the other resources available, it’s worth putting the message out again.

Needham has always been a community that takes care of its neighbors, and we are incredibly proud to be part of that. If we can help lighten the load for even one family, it’s worth it.

Every conversation will remain private. If you know someone who may need a little extra support but is hesitant to ask, encourage them to reach out.

Last night, our officers along with Needham Fire responded to a call that reminds us just how important it is for children to know what to do in an emergency.

Officers were dispatched to a home for a report of a male actively choking. Family members were desperately trying to dislodge the obstruction, while two children, just 9 and 11 years old, recognized the seriousness of the situation and successfully called 911 to get help on the way.

When officers arrived, the male was still choking. An officer immediately stepped in and was ultimately able to dislodge the obstruction.

We could not be prouder of these two kids.

In what was undoubtedly a frightening and stressful moment, they stayed calm enough to call 911, communicate with the dispatchers, and make sure emergency responders knew where they were needed. Their actions helped get assistance to their family when every second mattered.

We often remind parents to teach their children their home address, how to call 911, and what information to give a dispatcher. Last night was a powerful example of exactly why those conversations matter.

To the 9 and 11 year-old who helped their family during an incredibly scary moment, you both did an amazing job. Your quick thinking, courage, and ability to stay calm made all the difference.
