Come cheer on Deputy Smith as he embarks in the Big Texan Steak Eating Contest on Monday, June 8 at 5:30! The Big Texan Steak Ranch, the legendary Amarillo institution behind one of America's most iconic eating challenges, is packing up its 72-ounce sirloin and hitting Route 66 to celebrate the highway's 100th anniversary. The rules? Finish a 4.5-pound top sirloin, a baked potato, salad, and a roll - all within 60 minutes, without standing up, letting anyone touch your food, or throwing up (though they do hand you a container, just in case). Do it, and the $72 meal is free. Fail, and you're paying full price with a very full stomach. The challenge traces back to founder Bob Lee, who originally fed cowboys all-you-can-eat for $5 - and one legendary cowboy absolutely demolished 4.5 pounds of beef. Fast forward to today: 99,208 people have attempted it, and only 12% have ever completed it. André the Giant tried and failed. Meanwhile, 120-pound competitive eater Molly Schuyler holds the record after eating THREE of them. The tour kicks off in California - Santa Monica, Pasadena, Barstow, Needles - before heading toward Chicago. Second-gen owner Bobby Lee put it simply: 'You've got an hour. Get to eatin', quit talkin'.'
