San Bernardino County Fire is using cloud-based videogrammetry to improve situational awareness, support tactical planning, and enhance firefighter safety during emergency operations.

The SkyeBrowse platform converts drone footage into measurable three-dimensional (3D) models and high-resolution, top-down orthomosaic maps. These visual tools give firefighters and incident commanders a detailed view of scenes, structures, and surrounding hazards to support informed decision making.

Applications include fire scene documentation, pre-incident planning, tactical operations, disaster response, hazardous materials incidents, interior mapping, and firefighter training.

By providing detailed scene information before and during operations, the platform helps personnel evaluate hazards, understand building layouts, and develop response strategies. Remote scene assessment can also reduce the need to place firefighters in dangerous environments solely to gather information.

This capability supports San Bernardino County Fire’s ongoing commitment to improving operational effectiveness and reducing risk to personnel. By incorporating aerial data and 3D mapping into emergency response, the department is strengthening its ability to prepare for and manage complex incidents.

At 7:15 this morning, San Bernardino County Fire responded to an unknown fire in the 14100 block of Slover Avenue in the city of Fontana. While enroute, the first engine company noted a well-developed column of black smoke and balanced the response to a commercial fire assignment.

Firefighters arrived at an outdoor recycling facility to find a large heap of scrap metal vigorously burning. The pile measured approximately 200 feet long, 100 feet wide and 20-30 feet high. Developing Santa Ana winds were gusting to 20mph at the scene and pushing the heat and smoke into adjacent commercial properties.

With all employees confirmed out of harm’s way, firefighters instituted a defensive attack on the pile utilizing a combination of hose lines on the ground and elevated master streams from truck companies. As the fire threatened to extend to a trucking yard to the south, additional firefighters were assigned to exposure protection and patrolled the community to the south for any signs of fire extension.

The incident was ultimately balanced to a third alarm response bringing 15 engines, three truck companies, two medic squads, one heavy equipment team, six chief officers and several overhead for a total of 78 personnel. County Fire received assistance from Ontario Fire Department and Rancho Cucamonga Fire District. The fire was declared under control at 12:35 PM and was successfully contained to the original property.

No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. No evacuations were placed. Slover Avenue was closed between Banana Ave and Almond Ave to support operations. Damage estimates are still being compiled, and the cause remains under investigation through County Fire’s Office of the Fire Marshal.

At 11:58 this morning, San Bernardino County Fire responded to a swiftwater rescue in the Santa Ana River near E Street in the city of San Bernardino.

Two adult females and their four dogs became stranded when the river level rose, turning their encampment into an island.

One of our swiftwater rescue teams utilized an inflatable rescue boat to access the island. The victims were placed into lifejackets. The small dogs were a bit too excited for the adventure, so they were secured in a mesh bag for their trip to the shore.

All were safely returned, and no injuries were reported.

At 8:40 this morning, San Bernardino County Fire responded to a swiftwater rescue in the 6900 block of Fairfax Drive in the city of San Bernardino. An adult male stated he was trapped in rising flood waters.

Firefighters arrived on scene and located two victims in a tunnel that feeds into the main flood control channel. While setting up for the rescue, a helicopter extraction was considered, but quickly ruled out due to powerlines crossing the channel at narrow intervals. Utilizing a ladder truck, swiftwater personnel accessed and removed the victims one at a time.

In the days leading up to the storm, San Bernardino Sheriff’s aviation units had flown the flood control channels and river beds announcing the approaching storm and to seek high ground. The victim told rescuers he had heard the announcements but had sheltered from previous storms in the same location and didn’t think it would be this bad.

Both victims denied injury and declined evaluation by paramedics or transport to a local hospital. Both returned to their camp outside of the flood control channel.

This afternoon, San Bernardino County Fire crews responded to an incident at a McDonald’s restaurant in north San Bernardino. In the city known as the birthplace of McDonald’s, the response brought firefighters to one of the most recognizable names in the community. Upon arrival, crews found the restaurant had been evacuated and found light smoke above the indoor playground area. The fire was burning inside an exterior wall and between the ceiling and the roof as well. Battling high outdoor temperatures firefighters conducted an exterior fire attack from outside of the building, truck companies attacked the fire from the roof, while other firefighters conducted an interior attack from the inside of the building to suppress the fire. It took approximately one hour to fully locate and extinguish the fire. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a heat-related issue, but no civilian injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Last night, San Bernardino County Fire, along with CAL FIRE San Bernardino/Inyo/Mono Unit, assisted the U.S. Forest Service - San Bernardino National Forest on a small vegetation fire on the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest.

Operating at night with limited visibility, crews faced challenging conditions, including steep terrain and medium fuel loads that made accessing and suppressing the fire more difficult. Through coordinated efforts and interagency cooperation, firefighters worked together to address the incident.

Strong partnerships between fire agencies are essential to protecting our communities, preserving our natural resources, and keeping firefighters safe in challenging environments.

As Fire Prevention Week winds down, remember that fire prevention is a year-round responsibility. Keep your surroundings clear of combustible materials, use equipment safely, follow local fire restrictions, and always practice fire safety at home or outdoors.

Together we can help prevent fires and protect the places we call home.
