Very high fire danger today. Please be safe.

Fire danger is very high again today, April 23, 2026, and burn permits have been suspended statewide where the DNR has fire protection responsibility.

Please avoid all burning until conditions improve.

Although the state received significant rainfall last week, the grasses and leaf litter on the ground dry out extremely quickly. Firefighters refer to this vegetation as "1-hour fuels" – in part, because they can dry out in about an hour after a rain event.

Fire can spready very quickly in 1-hour fuels with gusty winds and low relative humidity. In addition, northwest Wisconsin is still experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.

Check any recent burns for smoldering embers and make sure they are cold as fires have the potential to rekindle and escape today with increasing winds. Moderating conditions are expected tonight with rain moving in.

🔥Spring fire season is here. We just went from a blizzard to now being snow free and at High fire danger today in much of Central Wisconsin. Fire danger is a roller coaster. Sometimes we’re up, sometimes we’re down. Please exercise caution.

Training with our new SCBAs going through different obstacles relying on muscle memory.

Last nights training consisted of ice rescue. Great time to train with the equipment and drill on basic ice rescue techniques.

Remember that this time of year, ice depth can vary greatly depending on the body of water. Always use caution when advancing onto any frozen body of water.
