We were hoping to surprise the community in December with the announcement of Nekoosa Police Department K9 Program 2.0, but WSAW beat us to it!

K9 Ivo recently retired with the departure of his handler Andrew Berg, who resigned from the Nekoosa Police Department in October. K9 Ivo served our community and surrounding area for seven years and won several awards for illicit drug detection and tracking. Thanks to Ivo, and the K9 program, the community is safer with large quantities of illicit drugs seized.

Though his retirement is somewhat earlier than anticipated, discussion had already begun about his replacement due to a physical issue presenting in his hip as well as a limited remaining healthy work-life timeline. K9 Ivo also cannot continue to work with a different handler due to the deep bond created through years of training and mutual dedication. Maintaining that bond and transferring ownership when K9 handlers move or leave police departments after several years is commonplace and proper.

Funds and equipment purchased from the support of so many generous donors and friends of the police department remain and is dedicated to the future of the K9 program.

Our hope is that the position will be quickly filled to expedite the next chapter of the Nekoosa Police Department K9 program. It is our top priority to provide effective and comprehensive police services to enhance quality of life to our community that has been so supportive.

Happy retirement K9 Ivo, you’ve been absolutely amazing and will be missed!
