As part of the Speeding Slows You Down Campaign sponsored by NHTSA, a high-visibility enforcement campaign intended to remind drivers to slow down for safety, the Neligh Police Department issued a total of 29 Citations and Warnings, 18 of which were due to speeding.

Speeding-related fatalities affect communities nationwide every year. In 2024, there were 11,288 speed-related traffic fatalities, accounting for 29% of all traffic fatalities. Young drivers have a higher chance of being involved in speeding-related crashes.

Drivers in Neligh should be especially aware of this campaign and their speed. Local roads are where most of our speeding-related crashes occur.

Speeding endangers everyone on the road: In 2024, 11,288 people died in speeding-related traffic deaths. We all know the frustrations of modern life

🚔🎒 ’TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE SCHOOL — NELIGH-OAKDALE EDITION 🎒🚔

’Twas the night before school, and all through Neligh town,
Parents searched for school supplies they swore they’d written down.
The backpacks were stuffed by the front door with care,
While somebody yelled, “MOM! I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!”

The children were supposed to be tucked into bed,
But visions of school-day excitement danced in their heads.
Some dreamed of their friends and the fun they would share,
While the older kids wondered, “Do I really have to be there?”

Across town, the teachers made one final prep,
While parents celebrated surviving summer’s last step.
And your Neligh officers cruised through the night,
Preparing ourselves for tomorrow’s… traffic delight.

Because morning will come, and we know what that means:
School buses, bicycles, parents, and teens.
Cars coming from everywhere, kids on the go—
So here’s our annual reminder:

PLEASE. DRIVE. SLOW. 😅

The school zone’s not Daytona, Highway 275 isn’t a track,
And that stop sign still counts—even if you’re running late with a backpack.

Put down the phone and keep your eyes ahead,
Because we’d much rather wave than turn on the red and blue instead. 🚔

To our students, we’ve got three requests for you:

🚸 BE SAFE. Look both ways and pay attention.
🫡 BE RESPONSIBLE. Make good choices—even when nobody’s watching.
😎 HAVE FUN. Make friends, make memories, and enjoy being a kid.

And if something goes wrong, remember this too:
There are teachers, parents, coaches, and officers here for you.

So charge up the Chromebooks and set every alarm,
Tomorrow morning will arrive with its usual charm.
There’ll be pictures on porches and coffee galore,
And at least one family turning around because SOMEBODY FORGOT SOMETHING AT THE DOOR.

From all of us at the Neligh Police Department, good luck to the students, teachers, staff, and parents of Neligh-Oakdale!

Here’s to a year that’s safe, responsible, and FUN.

And the Chief could be heard as he drove out of sight:

“SLOW DOWN IN THE SCHOOL ZONE… AND HAVE A GOOD NIGHT!” 🚔😂

We extend our condolences to the City of Crete and the Crete Police Department on the loss of Chief Gary Young. Our thoughts and prayers with the department and his family during this difficult time.

City of Crete departments and staff are deeply saddened by the passing yesterday, July 27, of Chief of Police Gary Young. He served the Crete Police Department honorably for 41 years and was appointed Chief in 2022. A true public servant, Young was dedicated to the safety of his community and worked hard to make sure the department and officers in his command were successful in meeting the needs of residents. His commitment to the highest ideals of law enforcement and service to the Crete community will not be forgotten.

The thoughts of City of Crete staff are with his family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time.

NHTSA Reminds Drivers:
Obeying Speed Limits Is the Law, Lives Depend on It

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Neligh Police Department reminds drivers that speeding has legal consequences. As part of the Speeding Slows You Down high-visibility enforcement campaign from July 27th through August 9th, drivers will see more law enforcement on the roads.

Speeding-related fatalities affect communities nationwide every year. In 2024, there were 11,288 speed-related traffic fatalities, accounting for 29% of all traffic fatalities. Young drivers have a higher chance of being involved in speeding-related crashes.

Speed limits are in place to keep all road users safe. Every mile per hour over the limit increases the risk of a crash and the severity of injuries. Violating the speed limit and driving too fast for road conditions endangers everyone on the road.

Drivers in Neligh should be especially aware of this campaign and their speed. Local roads are where most of our speeding-related crashes occur.

For more information on speeding, visit NHTSA.gov/Speeding.

I would like to take a minute to talk about scooter and bicycle safety around town.

Lately, we have fielded a number of complaints and even observed some behaviors ourselves that are very dangerous from people on scooters and bikes. Our primary concern with anything, including this discussion, is safety.

When it comes to a regular bike, there are city ordinances in place to help ensure that safety. They can be summarized as not riding faster than reasonable, obey traffic rules and stop at stop signs, ensure maximum visibility when rode after dark, and stay off to the side of the road so as not to impede traffic when riding.

Where things become very concerning is the motorized scooters and bikes. Particularly because of the capabilities of these to go much quicker than someone just pedaling around. At this time, there are no specific state or Neligh city ordinances limiting these beyond what we described earlier with bikes, but we do ask that everyone be sure to use due caution with them. E-bikes and scooters can be fun and useful modes of transportation for people and at no point do we want to see the fun taken away from them, but they should be treated with care. Please be safe and remember to follow traffic laws when using them.

Thank you and everyone enjoy a great fair week.
