The Belted Kingfishers unlike most birds that nest in trees, dig horizontal tunnels into steep earthen, sand, or gravel banks. Both parents use their heavy bills and feet to excavate a tunnel that typically extends 3 to 6 feet deep, ending in a safe, secluded nesting cavity.
