Clover leaf Mine

The Uncle Sam mine at Roubaix, South Dakota was a gold producer first located in 1878. In 1898 it became known as the Clover Leaf mine (seen here around 1900). Clover Leaf operated until 1905, when extensive underground flooding resulted in the permanent closure of the mine.

Here is some information on the Stampmill at the Uncle Sam / Clover leaf Mine , as it was upgraded with a 60 stamp mill from the Esmeralda Mine . The photo is of workers tending the amalgamation plates . This likely where much of the gold was stolen from the mine . As gold amalgamation built up on the collection strip , a simple putty knife and a quick motion into a pocket or hand would have made this undesirable work well worth it . Theft of gold and unrelenting ground water were major factors In The closing of the mine

I’m so happy to call this historical place my home . The Uncle Sam/Clover leaf Mine is featured in David A. Wolff’s new book . I appreciate all of his historical knowledge and research of the Black Hills and all of its fascinating history.

The Clover leaf Mine was a tour stop for the West River History Conference. I enjoyed giving the tour and sharing the history and future or the Clover leaf/ Uncle Sam Mine.

I seen this on the news tonight . It’s a map of important sites in the northern hills . There is the Clover leaf Mine , I believe this location will become very important again

The stampmill was 150 wide and housed 60 stamps to pulverize rocks into sand . Not only is this wall 150 feet long it is also 4 feet thick
