Last week, we got one of those phone calls that makes our day.

A former New-Mac member called after seeing one of our posts about capital credits. Her family had moved away in 2015 and she was curious if she might have capital credits from the years they were members.

Turns out, she had more than $600 waiting for her!

The only problem? We didn’t have a current mailing address to get the check to her.

It was a great reminder that even when you move away, the benefits of being a cooperative member can follow you.

If you know someone who used to live in our service area and has since moved, remind them to keep their mailing address updated with New-Mac. There could be capital credits waiting for them, too.

These are the fun phone calls. And one more reason being a member of a cooperative is pretty special. 💚

Waaaaaay back Wednesday

On July 27, 1939, the first contract was awarded for 318 miles of line to serve 546 New-Mac members. A little less than seven months later on February 14, 1940, the first six members got service.

The first contract was awarded to Laird Construction to build what at that time was known as "A" section. The first to receive electric service from New-Mac was Mr. W. B. Pittman. This was the line going east near where the Gayway Skating Rink was. (Shown below)

We are so thankful for the foundations that were laid 87 years ago that allow us to serve our communities.

Trees and power lines don't always mix. 🌳⚡

Did you know that trees are one of the leading causes of power outages?

That's why our crews work year-round to trim trees and clear vegetation around power lines. While it may not always look pretty at first, this important maintenance helps:

• Reduce power outages
• Improve reliability
• Protect against fire hazards
• Keep our crews and members safe

Regular tree trimming is one of the best ways we can help keep the lights on for the communities we serve.

Can we all agree this break from the heat feels REALLY good?
After the stretch of weather we’ve had this August, we’re thankful for a little relief!

Just look at some of the numbers recorded at the Joplin Regional Airport this month:
🌡️ 7 straight days at 96° or hotter from August 8 through 14
🌡️ 6 straight days at 99° or hotter
🌡️ 4 straight days at 100° or hotter
🌡️ Highs reached 103° on both August 13 and 14

And it wasn’t just hot during the day. On August 13 and 14, the temperature only dropped to 82° overnight.

That kind of prolonged heat means air conditioners are working longer and harder to keep our homes comfortable, which can have a noticeable impact on electricity use.

So today, we’re simply thankful for a little breathing room from Mother Nature.

Did you guess it right? 👀

A good rule of thumb for setting a utility pole is 10% of the pole’s length, plus 2 feet.

So, for example, a 40-foot pole would typically be set about 6 feet into the ground.

Why so deep? That buried portion helps give the pole the stability it needs to support the weight of the lines and equipment while standing up to wind, weather and other forces.

It’s one of those parts of the electric system you never see, but it plays a big role in keeping everything standing strong!

The Missouri Snapshots Photo Contest is accepting entries from amateur photographers. Winners in five different categories will receive a Missouri State Park getaway package valued at approximately $500. Second and third place winners will receive Missouri State Parks gift cards valued at $100 and $50.

This summer has brought some serious heat to Southwest Missouri, including multiple stretches of consecutive 90°+ days.

And it’s not just how hot it gets during the afternoon that matters. When temperatures stay warm overnight, your home has less opportunity to cool down, which means your AC may run longer throughout the day and night.
