Today we held a groundbreaking ceremony at the Newton County Sheriff's Office for our new evidence facility. The project was designed by Corner Greer Architects, and we have been working with them for the last several months designing a state-of-the-art secure and efficient space to store our evidence. The project was put out to bid and was awarded to Construction Services Group of Neosho.

The evidence facility project is funded by the Public Safety Sales Tax that was passed by the voters of Newton County in 2020 and was one of the capital improvement projects promised to the voters.

“Thank you to everyone that was able to make it to the groundbreaking ceremony. I also want to specifically thank the voters of Newton County for helping to make this project possible. We have outgrown the space that currently use for evidence storage, and we need to update our space to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our agency and ensuring that we are in line with industry standards.” Sheriff Matt Stewartt

The Neosho National Fish Hatchery hosted a fantastic Kid’s Fishing Derby, giving local children a chance to enjoy the outdoors, learn about fishing, and make some great memories with family and friends.

Events like this are a wonderful reminder of how important it is to get kids outside, introduce them to conservation, and build positive connections within our community.

A big thank you to the Neosho National Fish Hatchery and everyone who helped make today’s event possible. Congratulations to all the young anglers who participated! We hope you had a reel good time!

A reminder for Friday's Fishing Derby:

Registration will open at 8:00am. Even if you signed up online, you need to check in at registration to get a wristband and t-shirt. There is still space available in both sessions, but pre-registration has closed. Just show up with the kids.

There are 2 fishing sessions. Morning runs from 9:00 am - 11:00 am and the afternoon session is 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Afternoon registration will open at 12:30 pm.

Don't bring any of your own gear to avoid contamination. We will provide poles, bait, and stringers. All you need to bring is a lawn chair and a cooler to put your fish in.

It is a 4 trout limit. No catch and release. You get what you get. Volunteers will clean them and bag them on ice for you.

Parents or guardians need to stay for the entire session and help their kids. We do not have enough volunteers to assist each child. Younger siblings and family members are invited to attend, but only the kids aged 7-12 can fish.

The weather is looking a little iffy. We only officially cancel if there is lightning, so dress for the weather.

We hope to have a great day!
