This week we had the opportunity to take a group of at-risk youth on guided fishing tours — and it was about so much more than just catching fish.

These young people learned patience, teamwork, and confidence while being surrounded by adults who believe in them and want to see them succeed.

Friendly challenges were issued, many fish were caught, and memories were made.

A huge thank you to the guides, community members, and the Division of Youth Services who help make these trips possible. Experiences like this can leave a lasting impact and remind our youth that they are valued and capable of making good choices.

Sometimes connection starts with something as simple as a fishing pole, a quiet lake, and people who care.

Today we remember a truly special woman whose heart was focused on helping others, especially our at-risk youth. She dedicated much of her life to making sure young people felt seen, supported, and cared for. Year after year, behind the scenes, she gave kindness and financial support to help kids who needed hope and encouragement the most.

She was a fireball, quick-witted with a wonderful sense of humor that would always leave you laughing.

Her compassion changed lives in ways words can’t fully describe. She believed every child deserved a chance, someone to believe in them, and a reason to keep going. Her quiet generosity left a lasting impact on so many families and young people in our community.

She will be deeply missed, but her legacy of kindness, service, and unwavering support for others will continue to live on.

Rest peacefully, Ms. Kay Wells. Your compassion, light, and sense of humor will never be forgotten.

Ms. Kay Wells

This week, we proudly recognize National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and the incredible men and women of the Newton County Central Dispatch Center.

Every day, they serve as the calm voice in moments of chaos—the first first responders who answer the call when our community needs help most. From handling emergency and non-emergency calls to coordinating law enforcement, fire, and EMS response across Newton County, their work is vital to protecting life and property.

Operating 24/7, dispatchers manage critical information, monitor radio traffic, and ensure that help is sent quickly, efficiently, and professionally. Their dedication directly supports the safety of our citizens and the success of every public safety agency they serve.

To the telecommunicators of Newton County Central Dispatch Center—thank you for your professionalism, your resilience, and your unwavering commitment to our community. Your work does not go unnoticed.

We are excited to help with this event each year!
