: Steve Forbert, Neptune’s Troubadour 🎸

Neptune’s very own folk-rock troubadour, is part “Bob Dylan’s vocals,” part “John Cougar Mellencamp’s knack for rock melodies,” and a dash of “Bruce Springsteen’s passionate delivery.”

Known for his top-twenty hit “Romeo’s Tune” from this second album Jackrabbit Slim, the Mississippi born Forbert performed in 1970’s New York City, oscillating between the folk and punk scenes.

No stranger to 1980s either, watch for Forbert’s cameo appearance as Cyndi Lauper’s “Romeo” at the end of the “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” video.

Forbert continues to write and record music and is currently on tour.

On this day in , the Archives continues to spotlight Neptune’s local music scene.

When one mentions the name “Bruce Springsteen” one immediately thinks of Asbury Park. However, the “Boss” has deep connections to Neptune Township, too. Child, one of Springsteen’s earlier rock bands, consisted of drummer Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez and bass player Vinnie Roslin, both of whom graduated Neptune High School.

And in 1987, jumped onstage at the Green Parrot and played an impromptu gig with local group Jah Love. If you do an Internet search, you just may find a recording of Springsteen and the band performing a reggae version of “Born in the USA.”

The “Summer Breeze” wafting from usually doesn’t carry rock music, but over the years, touring artists such as and the Beach Boys have taken the stage at the Great Auditorium with their smooth “Yacht Rock” sounds and intricate harmonies.
John Lyon, better known as South Side Johnny, graduated from Neptune High School in 1967 and has been “Havin’ a Party” ever since as a long-time resident of Ocean Grove.
And even Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen were spotted this past March at the Ocean Grove Youth Temple. Springsteen and the E-Street band were using the venue as a rehearsal hall for their Land of Hope and Dreams Tour.

🎤continues as the Neptune Library Archives highlights the career of Neptune musician Q. 🎶

When scrolling through endless TikTok and Instagram posts, you’ve probably come across an influencer using the song “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazzarus as background music. But who was ?

After graduating from Neptune High School in 1979, Q Lazzarus, aka Diane Luckey, moved to New York City to write songs and break into the music business. As a struggling artist, Luckey drove a yellow cab to pay the bills. On one fateful day, film director Jonathan Demme climbed into the back of Luckey’s taxi while she was singing. Demme liked what he heard and decided to include Luckey’ song “Goodbye Horses” on the Silence of the Lambs soundtrack. Luckey made an on-screen appearance in another Demme film, Philadelphia, where in one scene she sings a cover of the Talking Heads’ “Heaven.”

Despite passing away in 2022, interest in Luckey’s career was rekindled by the 2024 documentary “Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus.”
