Neptune Township Recognizes International Overdose Awareness Day

Neptune Township and its Municipal Alliance to Prevent Substance Misuse joined other municipalities in Monmouth County and the Prevention Coalition of Monmouth County in supporting International Overdose Awareness Day with a short presentation and purple flag display at the Neptune Township Municipal Building, at 25 Neptune Blvd. Purple flags represent each one of the 89 Monmouth County lives lost to overdose in 2025.

The display also recognizes the countless more residents who have been forever affected by overdose deaths. But the flags are only part of the story. Overdose attempts are a much larger number; 344 non-fatal overdoses were also reported last year. The purple flag display in front of the municipal building will be on display until early September as a reminder of Overdose Awareness Day, August 31. Awareness around drug use and overdoses starts with each of us—with conversations, with reducing stigma, with standing in solidarity, and with compassionate support.

This year Stephanie Lashley, mother, Neptune Municipal Alliance member, Southpaw Gym owner, and entrepreneur shared her story. 8/20 2:00PM - Several rounds of severe weather will be moving across NJ starting now through approximately 10:00PM tonight. These isolated severe thunderstorms will bring the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, and an elevated chance for the development of tornadoes. The main hazards will be the potential for flash flooding due to periods of heavy rain, as well as gusty winds. Please monitor your local weather forecast closely, especially if you are planning outdoor activities. Most importantly, if flash flooding does occur, DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED ROADS.

Ensure you have a reliable method of receiving weather notifications from the National Weather Service. Residents are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts specific to Neptune Township, including current NWS warnings, by texting “neptunealert” to 888777. If you lose power, report it directly to JCP&L. If you observe an emergency such as a downed power line or a tree blocking a road, call 911.

This Saturday, gear up for the Monmouth County Bike Bash, hosted by Hackensack Meridian Health at Jersey Shore University Medical Center on August 15th! The event includes Touch-a-Truck, Touch-a-Helicopter, bike, helmet and car seat safety checks, and much more! Be sure to bring your children's bikes and helmets to the event! Neptune Police is proud to be a partner on this event and will have our Bike Unit there to assist.
