07/24/2025: At 7:27AM, Neptune Township Special Operations Team and Neptune Township Office of Emergency Management’s Hazardous Materials (HazMat) responded to the Township of Neptune Sewerage Authority (TNSA) on Old Corlies Ave for a significant Methane Gas leak in a confined space. The leak was discovered by TNSA staff who quickly evacuated from the building and requested an emergency response.
Upon arrival, NTOEM HazMat immediately deployed air monitoring equipment into the affected area which was continually monitored throughout the incident, confirming that the community was never in danger, nor were any residential evacuations necessary. Due to the location of the suspected leaking pipe at the bottom of a pit, HazMat and Special Operations Technicians worked together and completed multiple confined space entries to locate the source of the leak and conduct air monitoring, providing information back to the Command Post as they worked with TNSA to devise a mitigation plan.
After several more confined space entries were conducted, the leak was successfully located, and extensive ventilation of the building was conducted with the assistance of Neptune Firefighters - Neptune NJ until the air monitoring confirmed that the building was safe to enter.
The scene was turned over to TNSA as they work on repairs, and air monitoring equipment was left in place to alert employees and responders if any additional leaks occur.
The incident was concluded just after 10:30AM, following over three hours of operation involving dozens of first responders from a multitude of Neptune Township agencies. The HazMat and Special Operations responses were supported by Neptune Fire Department, Neptune Township EMS, Neptune Township Police Department, and the Township of Neptune Sewerage Authority.
Thanks to the teamwork of all involved agencies, this potentially life-threatening incident was resolved without any injury, damage, evacuation, or hazard to the community. We would especially like to recognize the efforts of the HazMat and Special Operations Team personnel who utilized their advanced training, equipment, and technology to ensure safety for the community and our first responders throughout the incident.
