TRAINING FLIGHTS:
A bird?
A plane?
—the world’s largest airtanker.
Today, Global Supertanker Services will finish training flights of the 747 Supertanker over the Colville Indian Reservation near Keller Ridge and 21 Mile in the San Poil Valley.
The plane, used to fight wildfires from its base in Colorado Springs, has twice the capacity of the next largest aerial tanker, according to the company’s website.
In training plans, the company has reported the plane can drop nearly 20,000 gallon-loads, but water drops on the reservation will be ‘at a very light concentration level and [have] no negative impact on the environment or persons.’
Most flights are expected to be simulated drops, according to Mount Tolman Fire Center officials.
In 15 seconds, the supertanker can create nearly 2 miles of fire line, according to the company’s website.
A lead plane and second photography plane may be seen with the Supertanker.
“The purpose of the flights is for airtanker pilot proficiency training in mountainous terrain in preparation for the upcoming wildfire season,” reads a release from the company.
The plane will be flying out of Moses Lake.

THE HOME STRETCH: Nespelem Canoers passed underneath the bridge at Kettle Falls around 2:30 p.m. All canoes, including two more Colville, the Kalispel, the Spokane, the Coeur d'Alene and Kootenai, met near the sharpening stone before heading to the other side in unity. The canoe journey began last week and will culminate with a salmon ceremony tomorrow. Cary Rosenbaum photo

CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO from Colville Tribal Fish and Wildlife of a Columbian sharp-tailed grouse. According to a blurb with the writing, the grouse congregate at their mating grounds (or leks) in hopes to attract and successfully mate with a female.
