𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝟏 𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐡𝐨𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭

Tahoe National Forest has reduced fire restrictions from Stage 2 to Stage 1 effective today, Sept. 28. Under these restrictions, campfires are permitted in provided fire rings or charcoal grills within Tahoe National Forest’s developed campgrounds and day-use sites, but not outside of those areas. Smoking and operating internal combustion engines off roads or trails is also restricted except in limited circumstances.

Under Stage 1 restrictions, the following activities are prohibited through Oct. 31, 2026:

🚫 Building or maintaining a fire, campfire or charcoal briquette fire outside of provided fire rings or charcoal grills within designated developed campgrounds and picnic areas.

🚫 Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a designated campground or recreation area, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.

🚫 Operating an internal combustion engine off paved, gravel or dirt National Forest System roads and trails, except within the Prosser Pits Developed Off-Highway Vehicle Area and boats on a water surface.

Under these restrictions, individuals with a valid campfire permit are still welcome to use portable cooking stoves, propane campfires or lanterns in an area at least three feet from any flammable materials. The portable device must only burn gas, kerosene, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel and have a shut-off valve. Campfire permits are available online at permit.preventwildfiresca.org.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions asking why we have not reopened the Floristion Fire area on the Tahoe National Forest side. While the fire was last reported at 96% contained, work on the fire is far from complete.

During suppression efforts, several miles of dozer line destroyed popular forest trails and OHV routes in the area. Crews and heavy equipment continue to work in the area to rehabilitate the impacted routes.

Within the closure area, there have been several motorcycle/OHV vs. equipment incursions. We ask the public to please stay out of the area—this is critical for your safety and the safety of our firefighters that are continuing to work in the area.

We are working to reduce the closure boundary as soon as possible. However, we do not anticipate being able to fully reopen/complete rehabilitation on all the trails. It appears likely that some trails, including Highball located along Boca Ridge, will remain closed through 2027 while we reconstruct or relocate the route.

The Stanislaus National Forest is heart broken to learn of the death of firefighting pilots working the Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park. We send our heartfelt condolence to the families and to our entire wildland fire family.

Honor Sentinel to Remain with Fallen Pilots

Following the procession from the Dome Fire in Mariposa, California to Modesto, Greg King and Ryan Cutter, the pilots killed in a helicopter crash Sunday, Sept. 20 will not be alone.

By their side are members of the Honor Sentinel, volunteers from a wide cross section of first responders, who will stay with the pilots until all arrangements are complete and they are transported home.

Andy Vasquez is normally a communications technician with California Complex Incident Management Team 3. He is also a trained Critical Incident Stress Management peer supporter and has assumed the crucial role of ensuring the two pilots are returned to their families with respect and dignity.

“For me this is the honorable thing to do,” Vasquez said. “To see these individuals all the way home; pay them the respect and appreciation they deserve. We all talk about one day possibly having to make the ultimate sacrifice -- these individuals did.”

“To be able to tell the family that their loved one was never left alone, that someone was with them at all times up to the moment they were returned to their families. It's an incredible honor,” Vasquez said.

Tahoe National Forest has assumed command of the Floriston Incident. Significant suppression repair work is ongoing including rehabilitation of forest roads and trails impacted by the fire and suppression activities.

Tahoe National Forest’s Floriston Fire Closure Order remains in place at this time due to needed staging for fire resources and suppression repair activities. The forest is working to reduce the closure footprint as soon as possible.
