Registration is Open for Sheriff’s Community Academy

This August marks the return of the sixth annual Community Academy, a free, 12-week course offered annually by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) that serves as an opportunity for community members to learn about the role law enforcement plays in the community while giving participants a more in-depth understanding of their own Sheriff’s Office.

"This is an opportunity for participants to gain an inside look at how our Sheriff’s Office operates—insights not usually available to the public,” said NCSO Sergeant Andrew Liller, who leads the Community Academy. “Although much of the instruction happens in a classroom, attendees will also go on fieldtrips, get to explore specialized vehicles and equipment used during major incidents, and practice evidence processing. Our goal is to provide community members with a comprehensive understanding of both the Sheriff’s Office and the broader justice system."

New this year: On the last day of instruction, students will put their new knowledge to use and review facts and information surrounding a real incident* that occurred in Nevada County. Putting on their detective hats, they’ll attempt to solve the case. (*Some case information will be altered to ensure anonymity).

While the class is not designed to prepare students for a career in law enforcement, it has been beneficial to students considering criminal justice careers and to those seeking to advance their personal knowledge and understanding of law enforcement and NCSO’s role and responsibilities in the community.

Community Academy Enrollment:
When: Every Wednesday, Aug. 19 – Nov. 4, 2026
Where: Eric Rood Administration Building, located at 950 Maidu Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959 (class takes place in person each week; some classes will take place at other NCSO locations).
Time: 6 – 8 p.m.
Register to Attend: Registration is available online, by email, or by mail. Visit https://www.nevadacountyca.gov/3313/Community-Engagement for registration details.

Participation Restrictions:
Class enrollment is based on a first-come, first-serve basis and limited to 24 students max. This class is designed for adults ages 18 and older; applications under the age of 18 will not be considered. Individuals must either be a current Nevada County resident or have proof of current work in Nevada County. Due to the sensitive nature of this course, advance registration is required, in addition to passing a background check. Individuals with felony convictions or who were incarcerated within 12 months are ineligible to enroll. The Sheriff’s Office reserves the right to deny additional applications for public safety. Registration is available until Aug. 16 at 11:59 p.m., or until 24 students are confirmed, whichever is sooner. For questions about enrollment, please email Sergeant Liller at [email protected].

It is always our honor to run in the annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, which took place yesterday morning, as organized by Nevada County Probation. The Flame of Hope, carried by Probation Officer Carver, continued its journey to the 2026 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games. Special Olympics Northern California provides free year-round programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is proud to raise awareness and financial support for this worthy cause in partnership with Nevada County Probation, Nevada City Police Department, Truckee Police, Grass Valley Police Department and Nevada County District Attorney's Office, who all had an opportunity to run alongside Special Olympians yesterday and the general public.

Kayla Moeller of CBS13 CBS Sacramento recently accompanied Sergeant Dustin Moe on an off-highway vehicle patrol to highlight the importance of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office maintaining a strong presence in the backcountry during the busy summer recreation season. The report explores the unique challenges of mountain search-and-rescue operations, from remote terrain and limited cell service to stranded or unprepared visitors navigating Nevada County’s rugged trail systems. Watch the video coverage here https://www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/video/memorial-day-visitors-warned-about-remote-trails-limited-cell-service-in-nevada-county/?intcid=CNM-00-10abd1h or below.

As thousands of people headed to the mountains for Memorial Day weekend, law enforcement and rescue crews in Nevada County warned visitors to be prepared before heading into the backcountry.

Congratulations, Sergeant Harrison! Sergeant Harrison recently graduated from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SBSLI) , a curriculum made available through the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. SBSLI is designed to stimulate personal growth, leadership, and ethical decision-making in California law enforcement front-line supervisors. It is an intense program based on experiential learning techniques, challenging law enforcement professionals to learn new ways of resolving issues through group and individual work. We are proud of Sergeant Harrison for completing this program and bringing his newly enhanced skills back to his team at the Sheriff’s Office.

– Every summer from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, our Campground Patrol Program, Boat Enforcement and Safety Team, and OHV Team are in full force (we also patrol in the off season too). As many folks prepare to leave today for camping or other recreation activities this weekend, we want you to know that we will be out and about patrolling Nevada County campgrounds, forest lands, and lakes, including today and all weekend. Our objective is your safety and the safety of others. We will ticket and arrest for DUIs, BUIs, disorderly conduct, drunk in public, fights, illegal parking, OHV violations, etc. so please be safe and plan your camping and recreation adventures accordingly.

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we'd like to remind folks that on Memorial Day weekend last year, 50-year-old Rebecca Heinowitz, of Barrytown, New York, drowned in the Yuba River (our original story from last year is below). Many rivers in the area remain cold, fast, and unforgiving. We had one river rescue just this week (this individual survived) and one drowning earlier this year. Please stay out of the rivers.
